Samuel Patterson was born in Niggs (sic.) county, Ohio, August 7, 1841. When a young man he came to Iowa locating at Mt. Vernon. On November 4, 1861, he was united in marriage to Mary J. Hiner in Clinton county. To this union were born eight children, Eugene Patterson of Estherville; Mrs. Roy French of Esthervile; Miss Malowa Patterson of Gillett Grove, Iowa; George Patterson of Mitchell, South Dakota; Mrs. C.L. Denison of Estherville; Mrs. Dr. G.W. Stemple of Eldorado, Arkansas; and a daughter, Hattie, who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Patterson settled in Ellwood, Iowa where they made their home for more than twenty years. After a residence in Ruthven of five years and Spencer nine years, five years ago they moved to Emmet county, buying a farm south of Estherville. Mr. Patterson early in life gave his heart to Jesus Christ and united with the Methodist Episcopal church, remaining a member of the same to the day of his death. He was a kindly man, a good friend and respected by all who knew him. During his long illness he has been with his son, Eugene, where his aged wife to whom he had been married for more than fifty years, was his constant companion. The funeral was held from the home of Eugene Patterson Sunday afternoon, May 13. A large number of friends congregated to pay their respects to the memory of the deceased. Rev. Frederick F. Case, D.D. delivered the funeral sermon. The body was brought to town and taken to Ellwood (sic.), Iowa, where the interment was made. (Vindicator and Republican, Estherville, IA, May 23, 1917)
