BEMENDERFER of Rocheter, one of the original 43 Indiana state troopers after the state police department was reorganized in 1933, died today at 91 years of age. Formerly of 1407 Main St., he died at 2:37 a.m. in Holy Cross Parkview Hospital at Plymouth where he was admitted Sunday afternoon. He had resided at Canterbury Manor Nursing Home for the last two years. After joining the State Police Department in 1933, Mr. Bemenderfer was a motorcycle trooper for four years, a patrol trooper for 14 years and a detective for five years before retiring in 1955. On Jan. 1, 1956 he became Rochester city police chief, a position he held for five years. Also, he and his wife operated the former Maples Tourist Home in their home from 1935-83. In January 1983, Mr. Bemenderfer was honored by Gov. Robert ORR with a special certificate for his service to the State Police. In June, 1984, he donated uniforms and other equipment he had used during his 23-year State Police career to form the nucleus of a State Police museum at the Peru Post. He was born Oct. 27, 1894 in the Millark community in Fulton County to Franklin and Nancy MILLER BEMENDERFER, and lived most of his life in this area. On Dec. 18, 1916 in Rochester, he was married to Glennie M. HARTMAN, who died Oct. 13, 1985. He was a 1915 Akron High School graduate, attended South Bend Business College, and had worked for the Ford Auto Agency in Rochester. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, the Police League of Indiana, was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of Police, was a member of Pioneers of Indiana State Police, I.O.O.F. Lodge, Rochester Masonic Lodge, Royal Arch Masons, Eastern Star, Scottish Rite of South Bend, Mizpah Shrine Temple and the Akron Jonah Club. He held the honorary title of Sagamore of the Wabash. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Claude (Catherine) BRUBAKER, Rochester, and Mrs. Robert (Marguerite) ENGELAGE, Peru; a son, Ned [BEMENDERFER], Plymouth; eleven grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren. A son, Frederick [BEMENDERFER] died in 1958. A grandson, a great-grandson, two sisters and a brother also preceded in death. Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Foster & Good Funeral Home in Rochester with the Rev. Russ WILBUR and Father Richard COOLEY officiating. Burial will be in the Rochester I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. until services. Memorial services will be conducted at the funeral home at 7 p.m. by the I.O.O.F.
