Buse who, after his struggles with Parkinson's Disease, passed away on Dec. 11, 2010 with his family at his side. He attained the age of 89 years, five months and 18 days. Pallbearers were Samuel's grandchildren. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Marion, SD. Samuel J. Buse was born on June 23, 1921 to Frank and Gertrude (Vietor) Buse, near Marion, SD. He attended Marion Public School into his high school years, until his father became ill and his help was needed on the family farm. On January 10, 1945 he was married to Bernice Gedstad in Luverne, MN. They farmed near Marion for 32 years. Sam served in the US Army during World War II, from September, 1945 to November, 1946 and was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #0266. Sam was a faithful member of Emmanuel Presbyterian Church in Marion and served as a Deacon and Trustee. He served on the Marion Lumberyard Board, Viborg Mutual Insurance Board and DeSmet Insurance Board, as well as being an agent for both companies.. In April of 1976 Sam and Bernice moved to Tea after selling the family farm. He accepted a position with the Lennox School District doing custodial work in Tea, Lennox and Chancellor schools, retiring in 1989. In 1986 they moved to an acreage west of Lennox where Sam pursued his love of antiques. He attended numerous auctions, collecting "treasures" and refinishing antique furniture. He enjoyed dancing and, along with Bernice and good friend, Marie Vietor, they taught dance classes in the community. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Minda DuBois and Lorene Shade and brother, Walter Buse. He was the last surviving member of the Frank and Gertrude Buse family. Grateful for sharing his life are his loving wife of almost 66 years, Bernice; his daughters: JoLene (Ronald) Horner of Omaha, NE, Glenda Trotter of Lennox and Deloris "Dee" McCarthy of Rapid City; 10 grandchildren: Michele (John) Jackson, Rhonda (Hoi) Pham, Ryan (Becky) Horner, Ronald Horner II, Mary Homer, Anthony Homer, Matthew Trotter, Melanie (Austin) Johnson, Danielle (Sean) McEneaney, Toni (Chad) Thorman; 16 great-grandchildren; aunt, Nettie Poppinga; sister-in-law, Elvina Buse and special friend, Garrett Havelaar; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
