Description	:	Samuel Keagy Hook married widow Martha Ann Harvey Lower in Garrett, Maryland. Together, they had one daughter, Lillian Elmira Hook Tuttle. According to the book "Kansas Settlers: 1854-1879" (pg 227), Samuel first settled in Douglas County, Kansas, in 1866. He removed to Maryland some time prior to 1874, and then returned to Kansas with his wife and daughter in 1878. Samuel and Martha had four grandchildren: Mildred, Xaina, Arthur, and Margaret. He removed to Maryland some time prior to 1874, and then returned to Kansas with his wife and daughter in 1878. Samuel and Martha had four grandchildren: Mildred, Xaina, Arthur, and Margaret. Daughter Lillian and her family moved in with her parents when her mother, Martha, became ill. The family stayed after Martha's death to care for Samuel, who suffered from a bout with cancer and continuing pain. Samuel's daughter and son-in-law tended his farm and provided his support. During this time, Samuel also sought help from several private hospitals in an effort to combat his pain. In 1908, Samuel met a much younger nurse named Augusta Foss Holmes Stiles at one of these hospitals, and he married her. He moved to Lawrence with Augusta, abruptly abandoned his duties with his Christian church and joined a Spiritualist congregation, and began hosting clarvoyant speakers with his new wife in their home. These events were advertised in the local newspaper in an effort to build the Spiritualist community. Initially after his move, Samuel rented his farm to his daughter and son-in-law, who invested their life savings in improvements. In return, Samuel promised to pass the farm to them upon his death. Despite this promise, Samuel sold the farm in 1914 and moved with Augusta to the San Bernardino Valley, near San Diego, California. At the time, he claimed that a clarvoyant had told him it was the right time to sell his property. This left his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren homeless. Samuel and Augusta purchased a ranch located on Lots 1 and 5 of Block 189 of Rancho Rincon del Diablo, in Escondido, California. It is listed in directories and newspaper articles as a home located on San Pasqual Road. They continued with the Spiritualist church, but their life in California did not go as planned. Augusta had Samuel committed to Southern California State Asylum for the Insane and Inebriates (renamed Patton State Hospital in 1927). He was forciblly escorted to the facility by Constable W. A. Best of Escondido on 29 May 1917. Samuel died less than six months later, on 13 December 1917. His cause of death was aortic insufficiency; he was 80 years old. Augusta committed suicide in 1920 at the age of 64, leaving all of her inheritance from Samuel to her own daughter from a previous marriage. California court records show that the ranch Samuel purchased in California was later seized and auctioned at a Sheriff's sale. No headstone was placed. OBITUARY appearing on 24 Dec 1917 in the Times-Advocate, Escondido, California S.K. Hook passed to the higher life December 13, from the state hospital at Patton. He was buried at San Bernardino, from the undertaking parlors of Mark B. Shaw. Additional to his widow, a sister, Mrs. S.E. Geist, from Pittsburgh, Pa., and cousins from Pasadena were in attendance at the funeral. Mr. Hook formerly lived in Escondido and Mrs. Hook still resides at their home on the San Pasqual road.
