Unfortunately, it appears that the Historical Society relied on this article when creating a biography for Martha in the 1980's. Here is the correct information: Martha Ann Harvey Hook was born on 23 September 1840 in Hampshire County, (West) Virginia, to Noah Harvey and Sarah Wilson. The Harvey family returned to Maryland when Martha was a child. Martha was first married to Elijah Lower (b. 1838, son of William Lower and Drusilla Harvey) in Maryland. Martha appears along with Elijah and several of his siblings on the 1860 Census, but he reportedly died of "Black Diptheria" some time prior to the 1870 Census. Any documentation regarding these events would be welcomed. Please note that Civil War draft records are found for three men named Elijah Lower in the Allegany area, all with similar birthdates. After Elijah's death, Martha married Samuel Keagy Hook, in Garrett, Maryland. Together, they had one daughter, Lillian Elmira Hook Tuttle. According to the book "Kansas Settlers: 1854-1879" (pg 227), Samuel first settled in Douglas County, Kansas, in 1866. He removed to Maryland some time prior to 1874, and then returned to Kansas with his wife and daughter in 1878. Martha and Samuel had four grandchildren: Mildred, Xaina, Arthur, and Margaret. Daughter Lillian and her family moved in with her parents when Martha became ill. The family stayed after Martha's death to care for Samuel, who suffered from a bout with cancer and continuing pain. NOTE: From 1903 to 1908, Samuel's daughter and son-in-law tended his farm and provided his support. In 1908, Samuel married a much younger woman (Augusta Foss Holmes Stiles). At that time, he rented his farm to his daughter and son-in-law, who invested their life savings in improvements. In return, Samuel promised to pass the farm to them upon his death. Despite this promise, Samuel sold the farm in 1914 and moved with Augusta to the San Bernardino Valley, near San Diego, In California. This left his daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren homeless. Samuel died three years later, on 13 December 1917, as an inmate in the Southern California State Asylum for the Insane and Inebriates (renamed Patton State Hospital in 1927). He was 80 years old. Augusta committed suicide in 1920 at the age of 64, leaving all of her inheritance from Samuel to her own daughter from a previous marriage. California court records show that the ranch Samuel purchased in California was later seized and auctioned at a Sheriff's sale.
