He was born at Belfast Maine, May 10th 1809, and was 76 years, 5 months and 2 days old. His parents were Scotch-Irish. His grandmother was a Prescott, of the Vermont-New England Prescott stock--- a family of which there is a celebrated memorial, in which are the names, with copious notes and short histories of all, from the first to the present generation and collateral kinsmen, including the deceased’s family. HE, at four years of age, playing at the door with his older sister, in November, 1813, watched the British fleet of 32 ships sail into the harbor at Belfast and take possession of the town, and was a prisoner of war with all the inhabitants until the armistice, when the British withdrew to Venal Haven, in rendezvous for the winter. In the Summer of 1815 the deceased’s father, Daniel Kirkpatrick, removed to Muskingum county, Ohio, at that date a comparatively wild and uninhabited country, where his father died. Leaving he deceased and eight small children, brothers and sisters, dependent upon him. He, with a few resources, endured untold hardships in struggling bravely to maintain and protect them. He was one of the first to discover Seneca oil on Seneca creek, since known as coal oil, but then used and peddled about that country and through New England as a medicine for sores, bruises, etc. in 1834 the deceased was married to Miss Celena Graham, who survives him as a widow. In 1836 he moved to Missouri, temporarily, and thence to Ft. Madison, Iowa, where he lived two years, the entered the land he resided at his death, near Libertyville, in this county, being one of the earliest settlers and a part of the history of this County. He raised a family of nine children, six boys and three girls. Three of his sons were given to his Country in his old age, being lost by the war of 1861, viz: Gilbert B., Lieutenant Co. B, 4th Iowa infantry; Selden G., Co. E, 2nd Iowa infantry, and Daniel, of Co. F,3rd Iowa cavalry. Of the nine but five are living, three girls and two boys; the elder son is a manufacturer in Missouri, the younger, Chas. W., is a U.S. special examiner of pensions, located in in Pennsylvania. The deceased was a devout and consistent member of the M. E. Church for 50 years. He and his now afflicted widow lived together for 50 years. He was a life-long abolitionist and stood alone as such in his neighborhood in the past agitation of that question, and was the object of slurs and course criticism, but courageously and untiringly worked for the liberation of the slaves from cruel human bondage. He has a natural genius for mechanics, and made the first iron plow made in Jefferson County, using at first wooden mould boards. He was a noble, conscientious citizen, father and man; simple and childlike in disposition, but fearless and outspoken for all that he believed right and against all that he thought wrong. by descent, by early training and by the hardships of early manhood he was impressed with sterling qualities. His life was eventful, useful, successful and worthy of imitation. To him death was but a golden gate of triumphant entrance into a blessed immortality.
