Description	:	Samuel Vance was the first Justice of the Peace of Harrison Township and served in that position for thirty years. He was born in Fayette County, Indiana, on April 8, 1819. He moved to the Burlington area in 1840, then settled near Eddyville in 1844. In 1842 he married Rebecca Morgan, a native of Kentucky. Read More	Samuel Vance was the first Justice of the Peace of Harrison Township and served in that position for thirty years. He was born in Fayette County, Indiana, on April 8, 1819. He moved to the Burlington area in 1840, then settled near Eddyville in 1844. In 1842 he married Rebecca Morgan, a native of Kentucky. The had nine children: Lydia, Oliver H., Mary M., Agnew E., Samuel L., Susan A., Fred E., James A., and Henry C. [1*] Samuel Vance lived in Fayette County, Indiana, until his twenty-first year at which time he moved to Burlington, Des Moines, County, Iowa. In 1844 he removed to Harrison Township, Mahaska County, Iowa, where he farmed on section 20, one and a half miles northwest of Eddyville. The Pekay Coal Mine which employed about two hundred fifty miners was located on his farm. There he was a justice of the peace for thirty years until his death. He joined the Church of Christ on March 25, 1846. Samuel had in his possession a small cannon which had belonged to his father who was a soldier in the War of 1812. On the Fourth of July, political rallies and such occasions it furnished the biggest noise of all. On May 27, 1878, Samuel Vance deposed for a pension application of Mary Ennis Vance. He was then aged fifty-nine. He claimed he had been a witness to the marriage of her and his father in February 1831 in Fayette County, Indiana. Samuel's mother was Margaret Ennis Vance b. 05 Feb 1795 in Greene County, Ohio; d. 30 Sep 1830 in Connersville, Fayette County, Indiana. Margaret Ennis Vance and James Vance were married on 02 Jul 1814 in Greene County, Ohio. The burial location of Margaret Ennis Vance is not known.
