Mr. Bumgarner had been in his usual health and had that morning went to his work at the Nixon service station. He complained of feeling ill and he went home, where death came in a few minutes. Samuel Lee Bumgarner, second son of William T. and Mary Loveless Bumgarner was born near Auburn, Ill., October 30, 1874. He departed this life March 3, 1950, aged 75 years, 4 months and 3 days. As a young man he moved with his parents and brothers to Fillmore county, Nebraska, where his residence has been continuous with the exception of three years spent in Iowa. March 4, 1896, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Ann Sandage in Geneva. The ceremony was performed by Rev. O. W. Fifer of the Methodist Church. Mr. Bumgarner spent almost his entire life at farming, leaving the farm in 1939. He is survived by his devoted wife, four daughters and their families, Rhea and Monte Randall of Muscatine, Ia., Virginia and Fred Schreiber and daughters Carol of Chester, and Mary of McFarland, Cal.' Gertrude and Chester Dudley and sons Richard and John of Geneva, Marion and Paul Witt, Mary Ann and Donald of Des Moines, Ia., two brothers, James of Strang and Grover of York. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Frances, and infant son, Donald, his parents and two brothers. He was a member of the Geneva I.O.O.F. lodge, and last summer he was presented with a thirty-five year membership jewel. Mr. Bumgarner was a man of sterling character, deeply loved by his family and held in high respect by all who knew him. He was never too busy nor tired to lend a hand when help was needed. He will be long remembered for his kind and loving deeds. Funeral services were conducted at the Kritner funeral home by Rev. Ben Wallace, assisted by Rev. Maud Mann. Mrs. H. A. Rosenau sang "The Twenty-Third Psalm" and "The Lord's Prayer." Pallbearers were G. E. Nixon, Dorsey Dudley, Bert Yates, Alvan Heath, Harold McCashland and Bob Jezek. The O. O. O. F. lodge conducted the service at the grave. Interment was in the Geneva cemetery. The Nebraska Signal March 9th, 1950 page 1.
