Read More	Malvern Leader , Malvern, Mills County, Iowa, Oct 12, 1922 ANSWERS LAST ROLL CALL - Samuel Masters, Veteran Of Civil War And Pioneer Passes Away October 5 After a long period of failing health, Samuel Masters, one of Malvern’s most highly regarded citizens and member of G.A.R. passed away Thursday, October 5th. The funeral was held from the Baptist Church Saturday afternoon, October 7th, Rev. J.E. Wilins, the pastor, conducting the service. A quartet, Hubert Chambers, Grover Rinehart, Miss Melvia Robbins and Mrs. P.M. Cadwell sang, accompanied by Miss Frances Cadwell. The pall bearers were S.R. Skaggs, Gay Breeding, Andy Berkhimer, J.W. McNutty, E.C. Collins and John Clayton. The honorary pall bearers were members of the G.A.R.: Col. A.J. Chantry, C.W. Black, J.D. Paddock, A. Ring, John Suits and Robert Hammond. Mr. Masters joined the Baptist Church thirty years ago and for the past twenty years had been a member of the Malvern Baptist Church. The following obituary was read: Samuel Masters was born in Jackson County, Ohio, October 11, 1836 and died at Malvern on October 5th, 1922, age 85 years 11 months and 24 days. Preceding the Civil War he with his family emigrated to Nebraska, later moving to Ringgold County, Iowa. About the year 1860 he moved to Mills County, where he has resided continuously since. In 1860 he was married to Elizabeth Rickabaugh. To this union two children were born, Mrs. W.D. Shepard of Marion, Iowa, and Mrs. W.W. Runyon of Glenwood. He entered the services of his country on the 6th day of October, 1864, serving under General Sherman, participating in the famous March to the Sea and the northward sweep thru the Carolinas. He was honorably discharged at Louisville, Kentucky, on the 24th of July, 1845. During this period of service his wife passed away and his first knowledge of this was when he returned home. On February 1st, 1872, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Johnson. To this union six children were born: Edward who died April 22, 1901, Robert of Lincoln, Nebr., George E. of Glenwood, Clara who died August 21, 1884, Anna who died September 17, 1892, and Everett of Omaha, Nebr. In addition to the three sons, there survive him, his wife, eight grandchildren and 13 great grand children. Friends from a distance attending the funeral were: James H. Johnson, Stella Worman and Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Miller of Weeping Water, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. Hoffmier of Sioux City, Mrs. Bertha Swisher and Lester Wright of Council Bluffs, E.P. Masters and family of Omaha, Robert Masters and son Gene of Lincoln, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. George Masters, S.M. Criswell, Mrs. W.W. Runyon, Mrs. John Chamberlain, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Fickel and J.F. Ackerman of Glenwood and Rea Shepard and family of Hastings.
