We learn as we go to press this morning that Samuel Gilbert, well known by all our old settlers made the journey home to his Maker early this morning. The funeral will be held at the M. E. Church at Laird tomorrow (Saturday) at ten thirty in the morning. Interment will be made at Grand View cemetery. Gilbert was born in Kentucky August 2, 1841 and moved to St. Clair, Mo. at the age of six years. He entered the army in the war of the rebellion at the age of sixteen and served the union cause for four years and six months. He was married at Olathe, Kansas June 6, 1863 to Matilda A. Roberts to whom were born eight children. Six of them, four girls and two boys, preceded their father in death and were buried in Washington, Kas. The deceased lived at Olathe a short time, then moved to Washington County, Kas. where he resided for 31 years. Six years ago the family came to Colorado and settled at Laird. The widow and two sons, Bose W. [John William Gilbert] and Sammie [Samuel Webster Gilbert], survive their husband and father. He died at his house in Laird Friday, April 23, 1909, aged 67 years, 3 months and 9 days. The funeral services were conducted in the Laird Methodist Church by Rev. P. F. Walthall of the Christian church and the remains were buried in the Grand View Cemetery at Wray. Members of the Fred H. Beecher G.A.R Post of Wray acted as pallbearers and a number of his comrades attended the service. The bereaved family has the sympathy of a large circle of acquaintances and friends.
