For years, family members had talked about moving the graves markers from the old Lutheran Church cemetery two miles east of U.S. 75 highway. Gary Keim explained. The cemetery had become overgrown with weeds and brush from lack of care. Recently, plans were made to finally move the headstones to the Albany Cemetery. Keim said the family contacted Roger Popkess of Popkess Mortuary in Sabetha to determine how to properly move the markers. Popkess contacted the state and receiver authorization for the project, and oversaw the move, Keim said, adding that approval was also receiver from Brown County officials. Although initial plans were to move only the headstones, Popkess suggested the graves be checked for remains, Keim said. With the help of a backhoe operated by Duane Campbell, the work began. Samuel's grave was first. He had died of cancer in 1894, at the age of 44. Campbell removed about 4 1/2 feet of dirt in a wide area around the headstone. Here, a few pieces of the painted wooden coffin were found. A few more feet of dirt were removed with the backhoe before work with shovels, spades and pocketknives started. While only a few pieces of the box were found, many of the skeletal bones were recovered, as well as a piece of a button shoe, a coffin handle and parts of a silver plate that read "Our Father." All of the skeletal remains and other items found were placed in separate boxes--nothing was kept, Keim said. "Everything found went back, even the silver plate marked "Our Father," he said.
