OBIT: The passing of Samuel McFarland at the home of his daughter, Mrs James R Foster, in Creighton at 2 o'clock last Monday morning has thinned the ranks of the Civil War Veterans of the community to a mere shadow and removes from our midst a man known familiarly for many years as a pioneer in the life of the city's inhabitants. Death was attributed to the ravages of influenza of a weeks duration in conjunction with debility of the aged citizen. Samuel McFarland was born in Pennsylvania and had he lived until July 1st this year would have attained the age of 85 years. Mr McFarland, possibly the last of Civil War Veterans in Creighton served a four year term in Company E, 46th Regiment of Iowa, in the infantry with rank of a private, his own father being Captain of his company. During his service while on duty guarding a supply train at Collinsville, Tenn., June 15, 1864, he was violently thrown from a car and being severely injured was removed to a hospital for treatment. At the close of the war he was honorably discharged and placed on the pension roll. Samuel McFarland was a resident of Creighton for more than 48 years and for 60 years maintained membership in the I.O.O.F. order having been initiated into the Order of Harmony in Savannah, Butler County, Oct 2, 1872, the lodge room being a barn as better rooms were not available at the time. He was married Oct. 15, 1874 to Mary Darnell in the I.O.O.F. Hall at David City, Nebr., within a circle of seventeen fellow lodge men, the chaplain and county judge being the presiding magistrate. Four children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McFarland, three boys, who preceded in death at the ages of 3, 6 and 14 years; one daughter, Mrs. James R Foster, residing in Creighton, survives the deceased, as does a brother, Rev. Wm. McFarland, of Allerton, Iowa and two sisters, residing in Iowa, besides two grandsons and a great granddaughter. Mrs McFarland preceded the husband in death being called in 1921 at Norfolk, while residing with the daughter there. Mr. McFarland, while affiliated with the Odd Fellow Lodge for over half a century also held membership in The Woodmen of the World. He was always keenly interested in politics and staunchly adhered and upheld the principles of Republicanism. Interested at all times in public affairs he served for several years as Chief of the Volunteer Fire Department and similarly served as Chief of Police for the city. His charitible characteristic was courteousness to children. Except during illness he could have been seen each morning betaking upon himself errands in the city, which perhaps was conducive to his longevity. His kindly character and friendliness were characteristic and these commendatory traits will live long in the memory of friends. His lifetime was not idle, he having engaged in the plastering trade during his active life and for several years was engaged in the Fox Implement enterprise in Creighton. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Methodist Church with services in charge of Rev. William Wilson. The interment ceremonies included full military honors by Creighton American Legion Post, Membership of the I.O.O.F. Lodge composed the escort and performed the ritual rites at the grave. Let honor be accorded one who has served his country well, not alone as a defender during war time but as an abiding and useful citizen throughout a lifetime and may the memory of his character linger with the citizenry with whom he lived. ...
