S R Tish Samuel Randolph Tish was born in Penn., April 10th, 1819, and died at his home near Searsboro, Iowa, April 15th, 1905, being 86 years and 5 days old. He was married in Ohio, March 20th, 1845 to Maria Welker, who died Dec 31st, 1847. To them was born one son Isaac Newton, who died in Poweshiek Co, Ia, April 10th, 1862. He was again married Feb 2nd, 1851, to Alice Catherine Shafer with whom he lived until Dec. 8th, 1897 when death separated them, calling her home. To this union were born eight children, five boys and three girls. One girl Mary Frances died at Milwood, Ohio in 1857 at the age of two years. The children Jasper, Mrs Clinton Benson, Samuel, Mrs J R Rivers, Charles, Preston, and John all live in Poweshiek Co, within a few miles of the old home and all with their families were present at the funeral, which was held at the West Liberty Christian Church east of Searsboro, Tuesday afternoon, where his remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife. Samuel Tish was one of the pioneer settlers of the county and as he had a fine memory he could relate many interesting events of early days. He came out here about 1855 and bought his place, then went back to Ohio and returned with his family in 1857. He hauled the lumber for his house (which is still standing) from Deep River and in which he lived until 1890, when he built the new home. He was honest and upright in his dealings with every one, ready and willing to help the needy. He was a kind loving father, anxious to do all he could for his children's welfare. He was a very affectionate grandfather, always please to amuse and care for the little ones and ever ready to leave his work to help them out of some childish trouble. He was sick for some time but only confined to his bed a few weeks. He bore his sufferings with patience all through his sickness. He seemed to be getting better and was able to sit up part of the time, but Saturday morning he peacefully fell asleep. The children feel thankful to the neighbors and friends who helped during this sad bereavement.
