THANK YOU, our family is very grateful for your help. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Samuel Thomas SUMNER was born in Salt Creek Township, Davis County, Iowa on November 18, 1855. His parents were Ephraim Cummins SUMNER and Mary M. DODSON/DOTSON; they had married at the home of Mary's parents on August 15, 1852 in Davis County. He was the second child of eight born to Ephraim and Mary. His seven siblings were: Mary Elizabeth, Eliza Olive, James R., Ephraim Cummins, John T., William Acey, and Edward. By 1860, the SUMNER family had moved near Unionville, Appanoose County, Iowa. Samuel's father primarily worked as a farmer to support his family but he also did work as a teamster and later worked in a sawmill (a.k.a. lumber mill) where logs were cut into lumber. On August 22, 1862, Ephraim enlisted in Company C, 36th Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private. On April 15, 1863, he received a disability discharge due to emaciation and a severe cough; but Ephraim was determined to return to duty, and on January 25, 1864, he re-enlisted with Company C and served the Union until the end of the war. He was mustered out on June 17, 1865. In 1874, the family moved near Elkhorn in Douglas County, Nebraska. On March 29, 1880 in Douglas County, Samuel T. SUMNER, age 23, married Sophronia GILMORE, age 18 (the daughter of James GILMORE and Elizabeth McCASKEY). After their marriage, they lived and farmed with Samuel's parents and four of his siblings; and during 1881, the Ephraim SUMNER family along with Samuel and Sophronia moved to Clay County, Nebraska. By 1890, Samuel and Sophronia with their children had returned to Douglas County, Nebraska where they lived until 1916. In 1916, they settled with their son, James Ephraim, and his wife, Lizzie, on a farm in Kimball County, Nebraska where Samuel and Sophronia lived the rest of their lives. Samuel Thomas SUMNER died of a heart attack during the afternoon of June 14, 1930 while working in a field on the farm him and his son, James, operated together; and on November 1, 1936, "Phrona" died from a "heart aliment" and was buried November 4th beside her husband, "Sam", at the Kimball Cemetery in Kimball County, Nebraska. They were survived by four daughters: Maud Evelyn, Ada Viola, Nora Belle, and Iva Pearl; and two sons: Owen Perry and James Ephraim; and thirty-three grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The photograph was taken at Waterloo, Douglas County, Nebraska. One child had preceded Sophronia and Samuel in death, a daughter, Matilda "Tilla" SUMNER. Per the June 1, 1884 - May 31, 1885 Mortality Schedule for Marshall Precinct, Clay County, Nebraska: Matilda died during July 1884 of "brain fever". Her headstone stated she was only 1 year, 7 months, and 5 days old. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biography contributed to Find A Grave by L.
