THANK YOU, our family is very grateful for your help. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sophronia Ann "Phrona" was born on the GILMORE family farm located in rural Appanoose County, Iowa near Moravia. Her parents were Irish immigrants, James GILMORE and Elizabeth Mary "Bessie" McCaskey, who married in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on November 14, 1849. Phrona was the fourth child and third daughter in a family of seven children born to James and Elizabeth. Sophronia's six siblings were: Thomas, Mary Matilda, Eliza Jane, Ellen Sarah, Fannie Belle, and Emma. When Sophronia was six, her mother died on March 25, 1869. Not long after her mother's death, the family moved to rural Monroe County, Iowa near Albia. While settling into their new home, James GILMORE met Nancy C. REYNOLDS, the daughter of nearby neighbors. On September 7, 1869, James and Nancy married in Monroe County, and at the age of 28, Nancy became a devoted step-mother to James and Elizabeth's seven children (ranging in ages of fourteen to an infant possibly less than one year old). During January 1875, when Sophronia was age twelve, the GILMOREs welcomed a new addition to the family, James and Nancy's newborn daughter, Iba. In 1879, the GILMORE family removed from Iowa to Douglas County, Nebraska and settled on a farm about two miles northwest of Elkhorn. They raised grain, cattle, and had a small orchard. After obtaining a marriage license on March 28th, Samuel Thomas SUMNER, age 23, and Sophronia GILLMORE [GILMORE], age 18, married on March 29, 1880. Their marriage followed the March 25, 1880 marriage of Phrona's older sister, Eliza GILLMORE [GILMORE], age 20, to James Martin TAYLOR, age 25; they had obtained their license March 23rd. The Reverend R. R. WILSON joined each couple in marriage in Elkhorn, Douglas County, Nebraska on their respective wedding days. As newlyweds, Sam and Phrona, lived on the SUMNER farm in Douglas County with his parents, Ephraim and Mary. During 1881, the SUMNERs moved to Clay County (near Clay Center), Nebraska to farm; and by 1885, the Nebraska State Census showed Samuel, Sophronia, and their three children along with Samuel's parents and brothers (James, William, and Edward) living and farming together. By 1890, they had returned to Douglas County, Nebraska near Elkhorn where they lived until 1916. In 1916, they settled with their son, James Ephraim, and his wife, Lizzie on a farm in Kimball County, Nebraska near the Kimball community; they remained there the rest of their lives. Samuel SUMNER died of a heart attack during the afternoon while working on their farm June 14, 1930. After having been ill for several months, Sophronia died of a heart condition on November 1, 1936 at the home of her son, James Ephraim, and daughter-in-law, Lizzie Balford (WEEKS) SUMNER. James and Lizzie's home was located about fifteen miles southwest of Kimball. On November 4, 1936, "Phrona" was buried beside her husband, "Sam", in the Kimball Cemetery in Kimball County, Nebraska. She was survived by four daughters: Maud Evelyn, Ada Viola, Nora Belle, and Iva Pearl; and two sons: Owen Perry and James Ephraim; and thirty-three grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The photograph was taken at Waterloo, Douglas County, Nebraska. One child had preceded Sophronia and Samuel in death, a daughter, Matilda "Tilla" SUMNER. Per the June 1, 1884 - May 31, 1885 Mortality Schedule for Marshall Precinct, Clay County, Nebraska: Matilda died during July 1884 of "brain fever". Her headstone stated she was 1 year, 7 months, and 5 days old. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Biography contributed to Find A Grave by L.
