Franklin Fenner of the Baptist church in charge. Burial will be in the Orchard Mesa cemetery. Few persons in Colorado knew more of the picturesque frontier days of the state that did Sam Ashley. He came to this state at the age of four years in a wagon train, long before railroads had invaded the west. He was in the year 1864 that his parents made their home in the San Luis valley, while Indians were still a very live menace to lives and property. Many were the tales the late pioneer related on occasions of his earliest experiences in Colorado. One he told of members of their wagon train breaking a gap almost a half-mile wide to allow passage of a rushing heard of buffalo which took over an hour to pass through the gap – was doubted, but a check with the records of government parties in Colorado at that period showed that herds of from 700,000 to 1,000,000 head of buffalo were not uncommon at that time. After settling on the western slope, first near Fruita and later Kannah Creek, Mr. Ashley became a leader in development of the country in which he lived. The results of his public-spirited work on Kannah Creek, where had lived since 1899, were many. He organized the Highline Ditch Company on Kannah Creek, took an active part in securing a better school for the youth of that district, and was an organizer of the federal loan board for that community. He likewise did much toward securing the rural mail delivery route for that district and was instrumental in bringing about the construction of a good road map to the city intake on Kannah Creek. He will be greatly missed not only in his neighborhood but as well in Grand Junction, where he had many friends and business associates. In 1884, Samuel Ashley was united in marriage to Jessie Sandrett, from which union two children were born, one dying in infancy and the other, Charles, now residing on Kannah Creek. Mrs. [Jessie] Ashley died in 1892, one year after the family had moved to the Grand Valley. He was married to Susan A. [Agnes] in 1895, seven children being born to this union. It is considered unlikely that either his sister, Mrs. Armanda Parsons of Los Angeles, or his brother, Lee Ashley of Amboy, Washington, will be able to attend the services here.
