Chase died at his home in Jefferson township last Tuesday, about noon, and was buried at Ashton yesterday afternoon, Rev. Slocumb officiating. Mr. Chase had not been in good health since last fall, but his death was nevertheless a great shock to his many fiiends. Mr. Chase one of our prosperous farmers and a man that was honored and respected by all who knew hime, and his death will be sincerely mourned. He was laid to rest beside his wife who died Sept. 18,1804. Willis S. Chase was born in Orleans county, VT. June 13, 1837. He was the youngest in a family of ten children. He left his native state in 1856 and became one of the early settlers of Dane county, Wis. He enlisted for the cause of his country Nov 9, 1861, in C. G. First Wisconsin Cavalry and was sent first to Benton Barracks, Mo., and for one year did service in that state. He then joined the Army of the Cumberland, was in the battle of Chattanooga, and before Atlanta, taking part in Stoneman Cook's raid. After three years service he was mustered out and returned to Dane Co., Wis. where he engaged in farm work and work on the river. He drove to Dakota in September, 1879, and filed a soldier's declamatory claim on his land. He settled on the farm in April, 1880, worked for a few years at carpenter work to make a livelihood for his family and began farming his land. He was married in 1865 to Miss Mary J. Weed, a native of New York. Three children were born to them Mary E. and John E. who live at home and Willis W., who died about two months ago. The death of the son was a great shock to his aged father.
