At 14 years of age he joined the 7th Iowa cavalry, patrolling Nebraska-Kansas lands occupied by the Indians. He came to live in Nebraska in 1863 and is among the last men of frontier days who saw the country before its settlement. His first home was near Vesta. On November 20, 1871, he married Miss Mary A. He came to live in Nebraska in 1863 and is among the last men of frontier days who saw the country before its settlement. His first home was near Vesta. On November 20, 1871, he married Miss Mary A. Stewart in Pawnee City. The officiating minister was the late Rev. R. J. MacCready,D. D. pioneer minister of Pawnee Presbytery. They made their home for a year in Fremont county, Iowa. Their oldest son died there. In 1879 they settled on a farm southwest of Burchard, retiring to their fine home in the village in 1908. Mr. Crawley was stricken with apoplexy during the afternoon of May 24 and died at the hour of six. He was 76 years of age. Besides his widow he is survived by two sons and four daughters: Allan L. Crawley of Burchard; Ida Gertrude Fowler of Dayton, Ore.; Jessie V. Finch of Burchard; Anna A. Cravens of Armour; Ivan L. Crawley of Dayton, Ore., and Mattie M. Ackerman of Mission Creek. He also has two brothers and three sisters: Arch Crawley and Tom Crawley of Unionville, Iowa; Mrs. Mattie Ewing of Denison, Kas; Mrs. Mildred Bruner of Baldwin, Kas., and Mrs. Alice Lewis of Santa Barbara, Calif. There are six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. Crawley most happily celebrated their golden wedding the 21st of last November. At that time all the members of the family were present. They, with a large number of friends, rejoiced with them in the mercies of their long life. These now all extend their tender sympathies and commend to the everlasting mercies of God on high.
