His GAR membership records and other sources say he died on the 30th, rather than the 31st. I know this is debatable, but the closest I can come to verifying, through primary sources. Seamands was a Civil War Veteran, with Co. M. 2nd Iowa Vol. Cavalry. He was born on Dec. 16, 1828, in Lawrence County, Ohio, and his parents brought him to Jackson County, Iowa, when he was about 5 years old In 1860, they moved to Missouri upon a farm. He is one of the few surviving Civil War Veterans in the community. Upon the day of Memorial Day, Sanders passed away in 1911. He was about 83 years old and had been about to assist in the care of his garden and lawn. He was frequently seen downtown, Ida Grove, Iowa, Ida County. The funeral services were held in the family home, and the pallbearers were from the American Legion. Rev. J. J. Davies was in charge, and he was buried in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa. ∼Sanders R. Seamonds, b. Dec. 16, 1828, d. May 31, 1921; ~ Civil War Veteran, ~ Co. M, 2 IA Cav. f/3 yrs., w/Grant at Shiloh, Vicksburg & w/Sherman at Missionary Ridge & Chickamauga, wife: Annetta Walker in Dec. 7, 1873 in Clayton County, Iowa. When about 5 years old, his parents moved to jackson County, Iowa. He joined the 2nd Iowa Cavalry and enlisted in Co. M at Maquoketa in 1862. He served over 3 years and was with Grant at Shiloh, Vicksburg and with Sherman at Missionary Ridge and Chickamauga. In 1867, he attempted to settle in Dakota but was driven out by grasshoppers and returned to Iowa. They lived on a ranch in Clayton County for 10 years, then moving to Hebron, NE where they conducted a hotel for 4 years. They went on to homestead in Red Willow County near McCook, and, after proving up and suffering from the droughts of that period, they exchanged it for a farm near Mapleton where they lived 17 years, then selling out and locating in Ida Grove. They had one adopted son, Holly Smith of Chicago. brother: H. D. Seamands (Henry D. Seamonds) He was a G.A.R. member. ------------ Sanders R. and his brother Manaldo V. Seamands were listed in 1863 listing of soldiers, from Jackson Co., Iowa (same company, unit, and service dates). Sanders was listed as age 26 and married, and Manaldo V. was age 22. Sanders R. was married to a Julia A. Lawn in 1867, and probably an Alvina Paup in 1857, both marriages in Jackson Co., Iowa. Holly Smith was actually Sanders' nephew (if H.D. is listed as his brother), from his sister Margaret Seamands, who married Jacob Smith. --------- checking to see if Charles R.
