Seamands was born in Lawrence County, Ohio, February 14, 1842, and was therefore at the time of his death, 74 years old. He was on of a family of thirteen children. Of these four still live – a sister and three brothers – Mrs. Effie Hilton, of Lyons, Iowa; Taylor Seamands, of Maquoketa, Iowa; S. R. Seamands, of Ida Grove, Iowa, and H. D. Seamands, of Friona, Texas. The family moved to Jackson County, Iowa, when M. V. was a year and a half old. Then another move was mad to northern Missouri where the family remained until just before the beginning of the Civil War, when they returned to Iowa. He entered the army in 1862 and remained until the war was ended. He saw some hard fighting under General Sherman at Corinth, Tuta, Jackson, Tennessee, Vicksburg, Franklin and Nashville. His discharge was with all the honors of a true and brave soldier. He enlisted in Company M, Second Iowa Cavalry. His colonel, Mr. Horton, died recently. Mr. Seamands spoke of him tenderly. Three years after the close of the war he moved to Union County, South Dakota, where he engaged in farming, and then finally to Akron, Iowa, where for many years he has made his home, and has during his residence here won the love and the respect of the whole community. In 1867 he was married to Miss Ruth Randall. To this union five were born. The living are Charles, of Hettinger, N. D., Alva and Pearl (Mrs. Max Pollock), of Akron. Lillian and Edna were on the other shore to give welcome to the home-coming of their father. Fourteen years ago Mr. Seamands was converted in meetings held in Akron by Mathis and Pardun. Since that time he has been a worthy church member and an efficient board of the M. E. Church. For many years he was a trustee. As he could not attend the business meetings during the past year, he regretted it very much. To be detained from church was a great privation, which he keenly felt. His heart was in the work of the church and the official board to the very end. He loved the church and its activities. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, June 19th. The sermon was preached by Rev. R. L. Stuart, of Humboldt, Iowa, his old pastor. The remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery, which lies along the banks of the Big Sioux River. Members of the local Odd Fellows' lodge, of which deceased was a member, acted as pallbearers and formed an honorary escort in the funeral cortege. His loss is keenly felt by the whole community. He was as reliable as honor itself and his word was as good as gold. In his natural disposition he was quiet and peaceable. Close contact revealed the veins of gold in his character. With his means and fully up to his ability he supported the church and every good cause which came to him for aid. In his heart there was a vein of unusual tenderness which was very striking when found in a man with iron bravery in his blood. He could be as bold as a lion and as render as a woman in tears. In all his affliction, he was trustful, and cheerful, and patient. In death he found relief and everlasting life.
