Description	:	Sanders W. McComas was the son of Nancy Heath and William Burke McComas who had moved from Cabell Co WV into early Platte Co MO 1839. Sanders married his first cousin Lucy J. Read More	Sanders W. McComas was the son of Nancy Heath and William Burke McComas who had moved from Cabell Co WV into early Platte Co MO 1839. Sanders married his first cousin Lucy J. MO published in 1885: "As mentioned in the sketch of Stephen McComas, which precedes this, there came to Missouri about the year 1840, Burke McComas and his wife Nancy nee' Heath, both originally from Cabell County, VA. The former has been a farmer by occupation during his life, and though somewhat retired at the present time, he takes much interest in agricultural affairs. Sanders W. McComas was one of the family of children born of the marriage of Burke McComas and Nancy Heath, His birth occurred on the 2nd of Jan 1841 and he is a native of Platte county. Having grown up within its boundaries, he has very naturally become prominently and closely identified with its material progress. In youth he was denied the privileges of more than a limited education, but by self application and close examinatiaon of the means afforded, as well as by great reading in later years, it is but the truth to say that he has become one of the foremost men in educational matters in the State. He is well posted on the current events of the city also. In December, 1861, Mr. McComas enlisted under Col. __in the cavalry service of the Missouri State militia, and was mustered out at St. Louis, February 14, 1865 as second sergeant. He participated in the fight at Newton, MO, and in several skirmishes, among others those at Jefferson City and Springfield, besides pursuing Price and Joe Shelby on their raids through the State. Upon coming home he was married in Howard county, February 18, 1868 to Miss Lucy Heath, daughter of Judge Wm. R. Heath of Howard county, where Mrs. McComas was born and reared. Previous to this, Mr. McComas had purchased a farm to which he now resides, the one which he now occupies. This contains a quarter section of excellent land, and upon it are good improvements, residence, etc. For some time he has been interested in buying and shipping stock, his shipments amounting to about 100 car loads annually. In his political preferences he is Republican, though his brothers are all followers of the Democratic Party. To himself and wife have been given four children: Luella, William R., Lizzie, and Dollie. Mr. and Mrs. McComas are Methodist in their church tendencies. The former is an Ancient Odd Fellow." In the Civil War Pension file for Sanders W McComas, the following: Declaration for Original Invalid Pension dated 13 Aug 1891 he was 50 yrs old and said he enlisted 28 Jan 1862 in Company A of the 4th Regiment of MO State Militia Cavalry and was discharged in St. Louis MO on 7 Feb 1885. Personal description 50 yrs old 5 ft 5" tall, dark complexion, dark hair, blue eyes. Stated that during his duty around Sedalia, MO in 1864 he contracted rheumatism from exposure; his occupation has been that of a farmer and trader. Dept of Interior Cert No. 868393 dated 15 Jan 1898 he states he married Lucy J Heath in Howard County MO on Feb 18, 1869 by Rev Jackson, that he had not been married prior to this time and that he has three children: Ella McComas, Lizzie and Dollie McComas. Ella stated born Jan 23 1870, Lizzie born June 5 1877, Dollie born Sept 1882. In an 1896 affadavit he says "I am unable, after search, enquiry and effort to do so, to furnish other or further evidence of my rheumatism from date of discharge to 1870 for the following reasons: "My mother and father with whom and in whose family I lived from date of discharge to 1869 are dead. None of my brothers or sisters resided in my neighborhood during the period aforesaid. I have no relative living who resided near me or knew of my rheumatism during the time mentioned. Many of my nearest neighbors from 1865 to 1870 were southern sympathizers and therefore no neighborly feeling between us, and but few of those are living and they know nothing of my disease. But very few of my neighbors from 1865 to 1870 were Union people and they were generally old. Such of them as knew of my disease have died. I don't know of any person by whom I can prove the facts called for. The facts stated render it impossible for me to furnish evidence other than I have furnished of my rheumatism from discharge to 1870. In 1893 Sanders McComas age 52 yrs gave this affidavit at his residence in Platte City: I received a gun-shot wound in my back in the year 1865, the same was accidental shot given, wherein was engaged several parties in a fight of which I was not one of the number but upon steppin into the street an accidental shot struck me from which wound I was laid up for about 3 months. The injury to my thumb forefinger and middle finger of my left hand were received in the year 1887, the cause was that my left hand was caught in the cogs between the wheels of a 400 lb meat or sausage cutter. I was running a butcher shop at the time. That neither the gun shot wound, or the injury to my fingers on the left hand as above stated are due to vicious habits, and that said injuries are permanent in character. Physician's Affidavit 18 Mar 1907 states: The physician for about 35 yrs has treated him for sciatic rheumatism on several different occasions until about eight years ago at which time he moved from my neighborhood. The applicant was never considered a stout man at any time since I have known him and considering his age and infirmities would not think him able to perform more than 1/3 days work; he is 2/3 incapacitated for manual labor. Signed J.M. Robinson, M.D. Obituary from Excelsior Springs Daily Call, 28 Jan 1914 read: S.W. McComas Dead-Old Timer Passed Away Early This Morning Sanders W McComas, 83 years old, died some time between 2 and 5 o'clock this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Sam Clark, 423 East Excelsior St. Dropsy of the heart was the cause of death. Mr. McComas was a native Missourian, having been born in Platte County. He came to this city seven years ago from Platte City, where he was a stock trader. Two daughters and 3 brothers survive. They are Mrs. Sam Clark of this city and Mrs. Elizabeth Claussen of Davenport, IA, Tom and Howard McComas of Platte City and James of Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements have not been decided upon, further than that the body will be taken to Platte City tomorrow for internment.
