Description	:	Civil War: Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry Born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, Felipe Santiago de la Guerra y Lorenzana was the hijo natural of José Francisco Antonio de la Guerra y Carrillo and María del Rosario Lorenzana. He was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel May 6, 1837 (BP Baptism 01202). Santiago became a United States citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. He was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel May 6, 1837 (BP Baptism 01202). Santiago became a United States citizen with the transfer of California's sovereignty in 1848. During the Civil War he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant in Company C, 1st Battalion, Native California Cavalry, at Santa Barbara July 28, 1864. He served as the company's Adjutant under his uncle, Captain Antonio María de la Guerra y Carrillo. He participated in the company's memorable march down the Pacific coast to Drum Barracks, where stops were made along the way to allow jubilant Californios to entertain the men with fiestas, fandangos, and bull-and-bear fights. After the company received its mounts and equipment in the spring of 1865, it undertook the arduous march across the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, making brief stops at Fort Yuma, California, and Tucson, Arizona Territory. Lieutenant Guerra was posted at Fort Mason, where he remained until February 2, 1866. Upon his return to California, he was mustered out at the Presidio of San Francisco April 2, 1866. He returned to Santa Bárbara and remained a single man until his death at the age of 86.
