Born Maria Anita Concepcion Ramona de la Guerra, the daughter of Francisco and Concepcion (Sepulveda) de la Guerra, her father was the first mayor of Santa Barbara, where she was born in 1849. She was the wife of sea captain and artist Francis Alpheus "Frank" Thompson, the son of Alpheus Basil Thompson, who came to California in 1825. From her obituary in the Los Angeles Times, June 24, 1935: "Rites Today For Pioneer: Belle of State's Glamorous Spanish Era To Be Paid Final Tribute: Tribute to California's glamorous Spanish era and to a member of one of the families who played important roles in its stirring events will be paid at funeral services today for Senora Anita de la Guerra de Thompson. Services for the 86 year old senora will be conducted at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the cemetery of Santa Barbara Mission, beside the bodies of other generations of her distinguished ancestors. Senora de la Guerra Thompson, known as one of the outstanding representatives of the old Spanish aristocracy of the Southland, was born in 1849 in the celebrated de la Guerra house of Santa Barbara. Her father, Francisco de la Guerra, was the first mayor of Santa Barbara. Her mother, Concepcion Sepulveda, was a member of the family who were the original owners of Rancho Palos Verdes. Famed as a beauty and social belle of her youth, she married Frank Thompson, nephew of Capt. Francis Thompson, commander of The Pilgrim, on which Richard Henry Dana sailed when he wrote "Two Years Before the Mast." After her marriage she lived in San Buenaventura until she came to Los Angeles thirty years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Charles F. Thompson and Mrs. Helen Geddes; a son, Rev. Joseph Thompson, and a brother, Don Juan de la Guerra." Find A Grave contributor M.C.
