The family says... Read More	Sarah A. M. Paulk is a bit of an enigma. Genealogy researchers have puzzled over her for years. Her existence is confirmed through census records, a marriage record and a death certificate. The perplexing part is family histories do not mention her. Conversely, family histories from two family lines discuss the life of Lucinda/Lindy Paulk. Lucinda/Lindy married a William "Bill" Young and they had three children--a daughter, also named Lindy, who unfortunately only lived 2 to 3 years; a son Monroe and another son Thomas Jefferson. The family says she died about 1921 and is buried in an unmarked grave in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery near Malone "near the Paulk family plot." To resolve the conundrum, two researchers gathered the facts from family histories and compared them to the empirical data that was available from public records. To begin with Sarah A. M. Paulk (age 16) was listed in the 1880 Federal Census for Jackson County, Florida along with her father John J. Paulk and her mother who was also Sarah A. M. Paulk. In the 1885 Florida State Census, she was listed as S. M. Paulk (age 22). Therefore she was born in 1863 or 1864 (estimated as 1864 on her death certificate). However, there are no public records for a Lindy Paulk Young. At this point, it is important to interject some other family history. Sarah/Lindy's mother was Sarah Ann Granger, the daughter of Voltaire Granger. Voltaire appears to be an assumed alias. Voltaire (with various spellings: Voltear, Volteair, Valter, Vaultier, et. al.) appears in census, land and court records. However, it is generally acknowledged he is the son of Furnifold G. Granger of Jefferson County, Florida. Furnifold, or Furney as he was known, did not have a Voltaire in his will, but did have a Walter. Two other documents that have Walter rather than Voltaire are his marriage certificate to Mary Munsford and the death certificate for his daughter Mary F. Granger. In the 1880 Federal Census for Jackson County Florida, Sarah/Lindy's sister is shown as Withy (actually should be Welthy) Paulk. In the 1885 Census, she appears as Rebecca and family records say Welthy did not like her name and wanted to be called Rebecca. Given this family history of assumed alias names by her sister and grandfather, the current speculation is Sarah and Lindy were the same person and maybe she just wanted a name of her own rather than sharing her mother's. As further evidence, public records show Sarah Paulk married William Young, 18 Apr 1886, in Henry County, Alabama, which was just across the State line from Jackson county, Florida. Henry County later split in 1903 and that area is present day Houston County. The 1920 Federal Census shows Sarah and William Young living in Chattahoochee, Florida with their son Monroe, his wife Anna and their daughter Willie May Young. Family history says "Lindy" and William had a son named Monroe. As stated before, family history says Lindy died about 1921 and the Death Certificate for S. M. Young, Wife of W. M. Young, daughter of Jack Faulk (sic) and Sarah Granger, died 29 Jun 1921 of malarial fever and was buried in Jackson County, Florida. Her father John Jackson "Jack" Paulk and Sarah A. M. Granger Paulk are buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery near Malone, Florida which is consistent with family history of her burial above. The cemetery photo on this site shows the area that includes the Paulk plot where Sarah is believed to be buried in an unmarked grave. For these reasons, it appears that Sarah Paulk and Lindy Paulk are the same person. It is believed she lived her day-to-day life as Lindy, but used her birth name on official records.
