Description	:	Sarah Ann Irwin, born in August 1, 1848 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. She moved with her parents to Iowa and settled on a farm near Andrew,Iowa. She was married in Jackson county on New Year's Day, January 1, 1868. Like so many residents of Iowa at that time, Sarah Ann had been born in Pennsylvania. Like so many residents of Iowa at that time, Sarah Ann had been born in Pennsylvania. At the time of their marriage Charles Edward was twenty one and Sarah Ann nineteen. Charles and Sarah Ann remained in Iowa for four years after their marriage. Their first two children were born in Iowa: a daughter Hettie, born in 1869 and another daughter, Mary A., born about 1871. Then in 1872 Charles and Sarah packed up their things, their children, and moved west across Iowa in a covered wagon to the state of Nebraska. Nebraska had been a separate territory (1854) before becoming a state in 1867. Prior to 1854 it had been part of the territories of Louisiana and Missouri. In subsequent years Charles and Sarah Merritt devoted their energies to further development of their farm. They were also blessed with additional children. In 1877, Sarah gave birth to a girl whom they named Sarah Bertha, called simply Bertha. In February, 1883, after four straight daughters, Sarah gave birth to their first boy, whom they named Frank. A second son was born two years later in September, 1885, and they named him Wiley. Their last child, Lillie, was born in June of 1890 when Sarah had already passed her forty-first birthday.
