Mrs. Sarah McKee after several days of severe but patient suffering, on the 18th of Jan. 1879 died at her home at the advanced age of 71 years 8 months and 9 days. She was the daughter of John and Rebecca Armstrong and was born in 1807 in Athens Co. Ohio. In 1817 she, with her father's family, moved to Darke Co. Ohio but only remained there one season. In the spring of 1818 they removed to this place and were present at the time of the treaty of General Cass with the Indians that year. During that summer and fall they lived and kept boarding house in a rall pen, until the pioneer cabin was ready for them. In 1825 she was united in marriage to William Armstrong who was distantly related to her father's family. In 1837 her husband died and she was left with six small children to provide for through all the hardships and privations of pioneer life. In 1839 she became a member of the Presbyterian Chruch of St. Marys. In 1842 she was married to Thos. McKee who died Dec, 15th 1874. During their marriage they were blest with five children. These are the brief statistics of the life of our departed mother. At the time of her death, she was the oldest inhabitant of this county. During her life here of 60 years what changes have been wrought! She has seen the forest that then covered all the land, filled with wild animals and wilder Indians melt away before the woodman's axe and become the place of towns and villages and beautiful farm homes. Nor was she a idle spectator. But with her earnest and energetic nature she bore her full share of toil and hardship required to bring about these results. Those of us of younger years who have had the pleasure of hearing her know what a pleasure it was to sit and listen as she would sometimes tell of the ways , doings and adventures of this county and we deem it quite a loss to the future historian of our county that her knowledge of its settlement and growth was not accurately written and preserved. Of her character, as a Christian woman, a loving wife and mother, and a true friend, the few lines of an obituary notice are very inadequate to set forth. Suffice it to say, that she was "Christ-like in her Life." Her ways of gentle kindness to all tell about her; the sweet gentle spirit of resignation under trial and affliction;the earnestness of desire and effort for the advancement of the cause of her Savior; the prayerful interest for the welfare of souls of her large family relationship and all her many friends and above all her every day consistent Christian walk, evinced to all who knew her that hers was no hollow "profession of faith in Christ" Being a daily reader of the word of God she drew much comfort and consolation from its pages. Always when possible, in her place in the House of God, enjoying its privileges and blessings. How much we will miss her presence there and the strength and encouragement of her earnest prayers and cheering words. Who will fill her place? Sadly she will be missed by many friends and neighbors in her deed of kindness and love. And only those who have felt the heart of anguish of losing a living and devoted mother and grandmother can know how sadly she will be missed in the home circle. "like a shock of corn fully ripe, she has been gathered home," and though her labors and prayers on earth are ended it is a cheering remembrance that the influences going out from them shall never end while time shall Last. May we all so live as to be benefited by her and example, that when our call shall come, it may be said of us, as of her, "what a sad loss to friends, church and family.
