Read More	Mrs. Melvin Sundvold of Canton, former Hawarden lady, shot and wounded her husband late Sunday night and then sent a bullet into her brain, instantly ending her own life, according to the story of tragedy told by Mr. Sundvold. The shooting is said to have apparently been the culmination of a family quarrel which had ebbed and flowed over a considerable period of time. According to the story of the shooting told to Sheriff Nessa of Lincoln County by Sundvold, both he and his wife had retired when Mrs. Sundvold said she was going to get up for a drink of water. She left the bedroom and returned with a .32 caliber Colt automatic pistol and walking to the side of the bed, lifted the covers and shot her husband twice, one bullet striking him in the right elbow and shattering the bone, and the other bullet entering the fleshy part of his right hip and emerging from the left hip. Sundvold said she then left the room and killed herself. When found her body was lying between the dining room and parlor. Walt Tressler, a neighbor of the family, was the first to be informed of the tragedy when Colleen, 7-year-old daughter of the Sundvolds, ran to the Tressler home calling, "Daddy's been shot." Sundvold, who had been married twice, has been a resident of Lincoln County practically all of his life and served as sheriff of that county for eight years. He was first elected to office in 1922 and served 4 years. In 1930 he was again elected and served through 1934. He was proprieter of Mel's Place, a recreation parlor at Canton. He is 49 years old. Mrs. Sundvold, who before her marriage was Sarah Cammock, was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. Cammock of this city. She was born in Hawarden January 5, 1902, so was not yet 34 years old. She attended the public schools and grew to young woman-hood in Hawarden. A number of years ago she was employed in the Hawarden telephone office and later worked in a similar capacity in the telephone office at Canton. It was there that she was married to Mr. Sundvold in February, 1925. She leaves two daughters, Colleen, 7, and Florence, 5. Sundvold also has three sons by his former marriage. Following the shooting, Sundvold was taken to the Sioux Valley hospital in Sioux Falls where it is reported that his wounds are not believed to be of a serious nature. An inquest was instituted Monday by the Lincoln County coroner and state's attorney at Canton and agents of the state department of justice from Pierre also came to Canton to assist the sheriff in an exhaustive investigation of the shooting. A report from the coroner's inquest is not anticipated until after Mrs. Sundvold's funeral. Besides her husband and two daughters, Mrs. Sundvold is survived by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. Cammock of Hawarden, three brothers, Fred Cammock of St. Paul, Minn., and Thos. and Henry Cammock of Hawarden, and one sister, Mrs. Harry Brown of Delhi, Minnesota. When word was received here of the tragedy, Mrs. D. Cammock, Mrs. and Mrs. Thos. Cammock went immediately to Canton to make funeral arrangments and have been daily visitors there since. They state that the Sundvold residence has been locked by the sheriff and won't be re-opened until after the inquest is completed. They brought the two little Sundvold girls to Hawarden with them. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at the Lutheran Church in Canton. The remains will then be brought to Hawarden and interment will be made in Grace Hill Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Fed Cammock of St. Paul and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown of Delhi, Minn., arrived Tuesday to attend the funeral. Hawarden Independent 11/7/1935
