Sarah Monroe married Abraham Smock on November 15, 1838 in Indiana. Abraham's name is written A. Smock on the marriage license. Abraham was the son of Samuel and Rachel (Ryker) Smock. To this union seven children were born William, Andrew, Rachel, Sarah, Felix, Mary and Susan. Abraham enlisted in the Civil War on January 1, 1863 and died on June 3, 1863 at the age of 44 years. The pension has both of Sarah Smock Boas marriages information and dates for the children's birth and guardianship of four of her seven children Susan, Andrew, Mary and Felix. We found the probates of Sarah, Abraham, Abram V. Smock in the Davis County Courthouse. We have the Civil War papers of Andrew and Felix, marriages and land documents. Sarah married Thomas Boas on March 5, 1868 in Davis County, Iowa. We have a copy of this marriage. (Book B Page 366 Davis County Courthouse or GS Film Number 000968466 Digital Folder Number 004309566 Image Number 00427.) We found an article written by Sarah's nephew George W. Monroe about the Old Log Mars Baptist Church. His father was Samuel A. Monroe and Abraham Smock was his uncle. Along with a copy of the old land document for the church donated by Barbara and Thomas Clark dated May 16, 1857. In the article George Monroe calls her Aunt Barbara. Photo of Sarah from the Smock/Boas photo album now in our care and a old trunk with lots of old letters, locks of hair, genealogy and a family Bible. In the photograph album the following children's photos are identified as Catherine, Rachel, Mary, Susan and Andrew. Many of the photos are tintypes. The photograph album has photos of her parents and several brothers and sisters identified. There is a tin type photo of a young man in a Civil War Union uniform (but not identified) with a lock of dark hair. Daguerreotype photo of a Civil War Union soldier in case.
