Her death followed several weeks of illness from heart trouble and complications. The body was brought to the Wolfe & Gourley Funeral Home where it remained until time for the funeral services which were held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Villisca Methodist Church with the Rev. Martin H. Keast in charge. Burial was made in the Villisca Cemetery. Singing for the funeral service was by Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Davie, Mrs. S. M. Jolliffe and H. C. Lindell, with Mrs. J. L. Wheeler at the organ. Sons-in-laws who served as pall bearers were Calvin Silverthorne of Ottumwa, Iowa, Jay Ashbaugh of Grant, and W. D. Washburn, Will Farlin, A. J. Sanders, and Billy Wheeler of this vicinity. Sarah D. Keeney was born November 23, 1855 near Hibbertsburg, Tennessee and was 75 years old at her death. She came to this vicinity in 1865 with her parents, making the journey in a covered wagon and crossing the Mississippi on a ferry boat. They settled on a farm a few miles north of Villisca where she grew to womanhood and on October 6, 1875 was united in marriage to Clarence L. Smith who preceded her in death ten years ago this May. To this union eight children were born. One son, Leslie, died at the age of 7 years and one son died in infancy. Six daughters survive. They are Mrs. Cora Washburn, Mrs. Stella Farlin, Mrs. Maude Sanders, Mrs. Elva Wheeler, all of Villisca, Mrs. Clara Silverthorne of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Jay Ashbaugh of Grant. All were with their mother during her last illness. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. Lottie Gamble and Miss Susan Keeney and one brother, James Keeney, all of Villisca, survive.
