Description	:	The correct date of death, inscribed on the marker, is March 12th. Sarah's burial was recorded by the WPA Graves Registration Project as March 13th. Coincidentally (as far as I can tell), an obituary also said the 13th. However, going back a week in the same newspaper, it said the 12th. Sarah's parents and siblings are all buried in Nashua, Iowa, but she moved to Clear Lake with her husband in the early 1880s and they were still living there when she died. After her death, her husband and daughter both moved to Washington state, so Sarah is not buried with other direct family members, although her daughter's parents-in-law are also buried in Clear Lake (Aaron and Martha Gary in Section 4). Sarah's first husband had the last name of Smith. She married him sometime after 1860 and he likely died in the Civil War or soon after. They probably lived either in Floyd or Chickasaw counties in Iowa. There were no children from this marriage. There is a record of a soldier named John Smith from Nashua County, but it does not include information about his death. On the 1870 census she was a widow, living with her mother and another widowed sister in Riverton in Floyd County. Sarah and William Shanafelt were married about 1875, probably in Floyd County, but possibly Chickasaw (they lived just over the county line). William was also a Civil War veteran, having served in Company A of the 12th Michigan Infantry. He was a farmer, engaged in general farming in the various locations where he lived during his life. Sarah and William had one child, Ella Grace, born in 1876. Ella married George Gary in Cerro Gordo County in 1893. Soon after Sarah's death, William and Ella and George Gary, Ella's husband, all moved to Washington state. William remarried in 1904. He and his second wife also had one child. Ella died in Washington in 1911, William in 1919. They are both buried in Sunnyside Cemetery in Yakima County, Washington. NOTE: Sarah's parents, Joel and Polly, spelled their last name PARRISH. Her brothers all changed to PARISH. Unless I find otherwise, I'm leaving it as Parrish for her, since she didn't use it independently of her parents.
