She was the daughter of Jefferson and Amanda Hawkins and was born in Davis county, Iowa, December 21, 1887. She was a member of the Free Methodist church. Surviving are her husband, Arvin; two sons, Pvt. Chester Gilkinson [sic], serving with the army; in Germany, and Pvt. Joseph Gilkinson [sic], now stationed at Camp Hood Tex., and three grandchildren. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Amanda Hawkins, Ottumwa; three sisteres, Mrs. Stella Houk and Mrs. Grace Albright, both of Ottumwa, and Mrs. Susie Hanna, Davenport, and one brother, Joseph Hawkins, Ottumwa. Her father, two daughters, one son, one sister and one brother preceded her in death. The body is at the Johnson funeral chapel awaiting completion of funeral arrangements. “BALLARD SERVICES,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” February 8, 1945: Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Ballard, wife of Arvin Ballard, who died at the home of her mother, Mrs. Amanda Hawkins, 1219 South street, Wednesday, will be held at the Johnson funeral chapel at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Z. Everett Kellum, pastor of the Free Methodist church, will be in charge and burial will be made in Shaul cemetery. The casket will be removed to the home of Mrs. Ballard’s mother this afternoon and returned to the chapel at 11 a.m. Saturday. Pallbearers will be J.K. Baughman, Carl Hunt, Fred Hunt, Harvey Hunt, and James Hunt. (Only five pallbearers were named.)
