Enos spent one winter, traveling along the Raccoon River, trapping and hunting. He was twenty miles west of the family cabin in Greene County; this area was later called Jasper Hills, Glidden Township, seven miles northeast of Glidden. Enos decided to move his family to this area in 1854; they were the first white settlers in Carroll County, Iowa. Sarah Ellen Butrick married George Higgins on December 22, 1862. They were the parents of Jemima, William, Lecta, and George in the 1880 census, Glidden, Carroll County, Iowa. By cemetery and bible records, George and Sarah were the parents of thirteen children; only five lived to adulthood: William, Lectie, Jemima, Roy and Paul. Living near the marshy sloughs afforded excellent breeding places for germs and the death rate among babies was high. -------------------------------------------- Lake City Graphic - January 13, 1910: Mrs. Sarah Ellen Butrick Higgins was born in Davis county, Missouri, November 11, 1843, and died at Ft. Dodge on Tuesday, January 4, 1910, at 3 o'clock, aged 66 years, 1 month, and 24 days. On December 22, 1862 she was united in marriage to G. W. Higgins. To this union were born thirteen children, five of whom are now living. Those living are Mrs. W. H. Ford, W. O. Higgins and Mrs. D. C. McCaulley, of Lake City, Roy and Paul Higgins, of Fort Dodge. Besides her children, Mrs. Higgins leaves a husband, a number of grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her absence. Her favorite hymn, "I surrender all," best expresses her religious sentiments. Go forth, true one, dwell with blest, Thy work is done, well done; rest, rest, rest. No laurel we could cast at thy feet Would be one half so sweet, As to hear him say, "In Me thou art complete," To us it may seem long, but to thee, a little while, As day by day, we tread o'ver the miles, In Heaven, to see thy face and there behold thy smiles.
