Description	:	Sarah Jane Bales, daughter of L.R. and Mary Bales, was born in Green county, Tenn, Aug 25, 1862, and passed away at her home southeast of New Market on Saturday morning, Nov 7, 1936, aged 74 years, 2 months and 12 days. On Jan 20, 1881, she was united in marriage to Samuel A. Thompson. To this union were born nine children, one of whom died in infancy, Inez, twin to Charles. The living children are: Mrs Mae Beery of Hopkins, Mo; Frank of near New Market; Mrs Mollie McNutt of Redding, Ia; Charles of Bedford; Mrs Louie Straight of Clarinda; Mrs Thelma Miller of Braddyville; Mrs Birdie Thorne of Siam, and Harvey of New Market, all of whom were with their mother at the time of her passing. She professed faith in Christ at the age of 13 years, uniting with the United Brethren church and lived a faithful life until the end. They moved to Iowa in the year of 1902, living in Page and Taylor counties and moving to their present home in the year 1919. Grandma, as she was generally known, was of cheerful disposition, bearing her suffering with a smile and was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Besides her husband and children she leaves to mourn her departure 35 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 2 brothers, Jonathan Bales of Denver, Mo., and Arthur Bales of Los Angeles, Calif, and one sister, Mrs John Thompson of New Market. Two brothers and two sisters, Chas. Bales of Clarinda, Jasper Bales of Green county, Tenn, and Mrs Kitty Holt, and Mrs Edna Thompson of Clarinda, have preceded her in death. All that loving hearts and hands could do was done to relieve her suffering, but the Master had a place for her and He called her home. She was a loving wife and mother, a kind neighbor, and will be sadly missed by a host of relatives, friends and neighbors. The last night of her life was spent with her children. She said she was happy to think that she had such a large family and was glad to know that they could all be there to help care for her. Funeral services were held in Clarinda at the United Brethren church, Monday afternoon at 10 o'clock. Rev Shackleford had charge of the services. Burial was in Memory cemetery.
