Nelson Early Sunday Morning-Funeral Held Monday President of Pioneer Club Mrs. Sarah Jane "Jennie" Harley passed away suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. L. Nelson of this city early Sunday morning. Mrs. Harley retired Saturday night feeling well as usual. She arose about two o'clock Sunday morning, and her daughter, noticing she was not well went to her, and discovered her condition was serious. A physician was called but she passed away within half an hour. She was 73 years old the 10th of January. Funeral services were held from the M. E. Church Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock conducted by Rev. D. P. Neher of the Osage Church of the Brethren, and the burial took place in the McCune Cemetery. Music was furnished by a quartet composed of F.E. Roese, Miss Evelyn Dellinger, Mrs. J.B. Hanna and L.E. Wilson with Miss Freda Wilson accompanist. Pall Bearers were Mrs. Harley's five sons and her son-in-law. There was a very large crowd in attendance at the funeral, all the seating space in the church auditorium and Sunday School rooms being taken and there was a very beautiful floral offering. There was a large delegation present from Chetopa and other places. Sarah Jane Gordon was born in Wheeling, West Virginia, January 10, 1858. When she was yet a small child, her parents moved to Decatur, Ill., and in 1869 they came to Kansas, making the journey in a covered wagon drawn by oxen, and settled on a farm two miles southwest of where McCune is now located. They lived there until 1879 when they moved to Longton where she resided a short time. She was married to John B. Harley October 20, 1880, and returned to his home near McCune, where they spent the remainder of their lives. To this union were born one daughter and six sons. One son passed away in infancy. The surviving children are Mrs. L. J. Nelson and Dr. R. W. Harley of McCune; Forrest D. Harley of two miles south of town; Maurice S. Harley who resides on the home place southwest of town; Emmett C. Harley of Bartlesville, Okla., and Kenneth W. Harley of Chetopa. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lottie Jolly of Augusta, ten grandchildren and a host of more distant relatives and friends. Her husband preceded her in death December 21, 1921, since which time she made her home with her daughter. She was a devoted member of the McCune M. E. Church, and was president of the Pioneer Club. Coming to Kansas as she did in the pioneer days of the state, she was qualified by experience to be listed with the trail blazers of the commonwealth. She was a devoted wife, kind and loving mother, a most congenial and hospitable friend, and loved by all who knew her.
