Hughes Last Monday Evening The grim reaper has called from our midst two ladies who were old residents of Skidmore and community, during the past week. Last Friday evening, November 21, Mrs. George Beverlin, 'Grandma Beverlin' as many knew her, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. E. Owens in St. Joseph, and Monday evening, November 24, Mrs. J. J. Hughes passed away at her home southeast of Skidmore. Mrs. George Beverlin Mrs. Beverlin, who has been making her home with her children since the death of her husband, sixteen years ago, had enjoyed good health up until about five years ago when she had a stroke of paralysis, which was followed with another stroke about one year later. Since the first stroke, she has been failing in health and when her time came to go, she closed her eyes and slept into the other world. Mrs. Beverlin was 85 years, 9 months and 11 days of age. Sarah Jane Haynes was born in Randolph County Indiana, February 7th, 1839, and was married to George Beverlin October 3, 1853. To this union six children, three girls and three boys, were born, all of whom are living: Mrs. M. E. Thorpe and Mrs. C. E. Owens of St. Joseph; Mrs. A. F. Rohr of Kansas City; Jesse and Steve Beverlin of Wray, Colo., and C. H. Beverlin of Skidmore. All the children attended the funeral services except Jesse and Steve, who could not come on account of the serious illness of Jesse. Besides the children there are 21 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren to mourn the departure of their loved one. Mr. and Mrs. Beverlin left Indiana for Kansas in 1836 and came to this part of Missouri one year later. On the 22nd of February, 1837, they unloaded their goods in Skidmore and moved to a farm in Atchison County where they lived until about 28 years ago, when they moved to Skidmore. About three years ago, Mrs. Beverlin moved to St. Joseph with Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Owens. The body was brought to Skidmore Monday morning and the funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at 10:30 o'clock, conducted by the pastor, Rev. J. J. Cokely, and burial was in the Masonic cemetery beside the resting place of her husband."
