The newspaper from which it came is not named. "Sarah Jane Hobbs, eldest daughter of John B. and Emily Hobbs, was the first white child born in Washington County [Iowa]. This occurrd May 28, 1840, when the Indians were many and the white settlers few. when she was 10 years old she came with her parents to Marshall County, where they settled on what has since been known as the Thomas Swearingen farm. Here she grew to womanhood. "Her early education was received in the public schools, and when Albion seminary opened its doors to students she was in the first class to enter. Later she was also among the first students at Grinnell college when that institution began its work. "On September 18, 1867, she was united in marriage with Joseph G. Collar who, but a short time before, had served in the Union army through the Civil War. About 1870 they moved to Kansas where they took up a soldier's claim and homesteaded. In the late eighties they returned to the old home near Albion and lived in that vicinity until the death of Mr. Collar, May 22, 1915. Since that time she has made her home with her children, spending twelve years in the homes of her daughters in Nebraska. Two years ago last June she came to live with her son, Roy M. Collar, and his family in Montour." ~~~~~~~~~~ Female descendants of Sarah are eligible to join the Daughters of the American Revolution. Her great-grandfather John Hasty is a recognized Patriot on her mothers side, and her great grandfather Vincent Hobbs on her fathers side is also a recognized Patriot.
