Speedling (Appeared in Adair Co. Free Press March, 1912) Mrs. Sarah J. Speedling was born in New York City, July 12, 1830 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Geo Raper in Greenfield, March 2, 1912 at the ripe old age of 81 years, 7 months and 29 days. In the year 1870 Mrs. Speedling and her husband came to Cedar County, Iowa. From thence they moved to Adair County in 1875 and lived in the neighborhood of Canby until about two years ago when they moved to Greenfield with their daughter. Her husband, who departed this earthly life May 2, 1911, one son and two daughters have preceded Grandma to the world that lies beyond. There survives one daughter, Mrs. Geo Raper, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mrs. Speedling was a sincere Christian woman, whose sweet disposition won her many friends. She loved God's word and Jesus was ever her best friend. She longed to see the day come when she could be with Him and all her loved ones. A short service was held at the house conducted by Rev. Smidt assisted by Rev. Hill. The body was then taken to Canby where a short service was held at the church, Rev. Miss Lake assisting. The interment was made at the Canby cemetery.
