W.B. Kline of the First Congregational church, officiating. Mrs. Kline sang the following solos, "His Love Will Never Fail," "Thy Will be Done" and "Satisfied Sometime." She was accompanied at the piano by Will Aldrich. In the room where the casket were banked the beautiful flowers, offerings of loving friends, who had paid their last respects to this noble woman. We would mention in particular the tributes of her two sons, William G. Honn of Kansas City, and Edward E. Honn of San Francisco. William sent a most beautiful wreath of laurel leaves and red carnations, tied with a bow of purple. During the long period of Mrs. Honn's illness, her son, Edward, knowing her fondness for roses had with loving forethought supplied her bedside with fresh roses every third day. Within the past three months her sons had on two different occasions come from their distant homes to visit her, the latter visit being about three weeks ago, and when they returned to their homes at that time, they knew the parting would be forever. The beginning of the end of Mrs. Honn's eighty years came on December 17, 1916, when she yielded to an ailment which had been growing upon her for some time, but of which she had said nothing to her family. She lay for almost three months suffering intensely but ever patiently and quietly enduring. Sarah Jane Shamp was born at Worcester, Ohio, on June the first, 1837. Here was spent her girlhood up to nine years of age. In 1846 Faiirfield, Iowa, became the family home. She was united in marriage to Johnson D. Honn, in the year, 1859, Council Bluffs, Iowa, becoming the place of the newly made home. Here were born all the children. The oldest child, Frederick died at three years of age. The remaining five children, three girls and two boys as follows still survive the mother: Miss Nettie Honn of York, William G. Honn of Kansas City, Mrs. Kitty H. Miller of Fairmont, Edward E. Honn of San Francisco and Mrs. Mabel Ross of Fairmont. After a residence of twenty-three years at Council Bluffs, the family came to Fairmont in 1882, where the husband and father engaged in the mercantile business for twenty years until the time of his death in 1902. For the fifteen years past, Mrs. Honn has made her home with the children, for the most part with Mrs. O.E. Miller of Fairmont. She made three visits of an extended length to California. It was her life as lived during the last years with her children that is recalled by her friends as one of ideal beauty and richness. Her presence meant a sweet benediction always and everywhere. To have her friendship was to have peculiar and lasting blessing in the life. All her life long she loved the church and its services and for thirty-five years faithfully attended and supported the Congregational church in Fairmont as her church home. She ever had a passionate interest in life, in public affairs as well as in her children and grandchildren. Her reading, thinking and conversations were of the higher, the more beautiful, nobler things of life. How else then could she have had, as she so abundantly possessed, a beautiful, sincere, generous and noble spirit. Two of Heaven's best gifts she received into her life and cultivated them for their higher ministries to life and the soul. These were music and flowers. She loved the old songs and kept certain song books in her room where she often would read from them. Plants and flowers seemed to grow for her and under her constant thought and care when only with difficulty perhaps for others. The heliotrope and the violet seemed to be her favorites among them all. The plants of her care were not forgotten, even under intense suffering. They were often brought to the sick room that something of the old delight might be hers again. And when she knew that she would not be able to care for them again, she gave detail direction of time and place for them all. We will not know here how very much of peace and joy were brought to her life in the sick chamber through the thoughtful kindness of her many friends, who kept her room a bank of flowers. The whole made for a beautiful harmony in view of the patience, the uncomplaining spirit and the sweet smile of the gentle sufferer whose chief concern seemed ever more for those who watched and waited than for herself. but not flowers nor friends nor prayers nor the tenderest and most loving care could keep with us longer one born unto that undying life.
