Obit- SARAH JANE DANIELS Sarah Jane Daniels, daughter of Frank and Artella Tella, was born June 9, 1890 in Fordland, Mo. She passed away Dec. 2, 1975, at the Northwest Kansas Medical Center in Goodland at the age of 85 Years and six months. She was one of six children, living her early life near Fordland, on Dec. 20, 1908 she was united in marriage to Nay Daniels at the Tella Farm-Home at Fordland, Missouri. To this union was born two sons, Richard and Eugene and one daughter, Ruby. After farming in Missouri and the Benkelman area in Nebraska the Daniels family moved to a farm north of Bird City in the Big Timber neighborhood in 1929. They lived there until 1944 when Sarah and Nay moved to St. Francis. In 1949 they opened the "Corner Grocery." After her husband's death on May 8, 1967, Sarah continued to run the store alone until its closing in 1969. At that time she established residency in the Lebow Manor in Bird City which was home to her until death. Sarah was baptized in early youth into the Baptist faith, later transferring her membership to the Methodist Church in St. Francis. While living in Bird City she attended services and joined in the activities of the Lutheran Church. She was a kind and loving wife and mother, a dear friend to all who knew her. Her families comfort and happiness were uppermost in her life. She enjoyed sharing her hobbies of quilt-making, crocheting and many other kinds of fancy work endearing herself to the hearts of those with whom she came in contact. Her personage was well characterized in the paragraph of a term paper written by a friend, Alice Bluem, and sent to the English Department of the University of Kansas, in which she describes the "Corner Grocery" and its operators. She says; "on the north wall, behind the case where the school supplies, the penny candy and the bubble gum are kept, there was a shelf you shouldn't miss. This was Sarah's personal store- her stock of kindness, which she dispensed at wholesale prices to her friends, to elderly women with meager incomes, to families on welfare, and to handicapped people from local nursing homes. Sarah had found a company that would fill mail-orders at factory prices and there it was-displayed on her shelves, boxes of gem bright mercerized thread, crochet hooks, knitting needles, yarn as bright as autumn flowers, skeins of embroidery floss, scissors and thimbles. Best of all were the yards and yards of delicate lace, deep tones of brocaded tapes, embroidered edgings all sold at a fraction of the normal price." Those left to mourn her passing are her children, Richard and Sylvia Daniels, Eugene and Sylvia Daniels, John and Ruby Willt, all of St. Francis; her grandchildren, Ruth Daniels of Denver, Kenneth and Elaine Willt of Bird City, Bob and Janette Bowers of Maysville, MO, Scott and Debbie Wiese of Benkelman, Nebr., 5 great-grandchildren, Keela and Kevin Willt, and Christie, Robbie and Michael Bowers; one sister, Audrey Camp of Springfield, MO., and one brother, Charles Tella of Pamona, Calif. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, Lola Burks, Laura Burks, Eamma Tella and one grandson, Tommy Daniels. Services were held on Dec. 5, 1975, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bird City with Pastor Miller in charge. Pallbearers were Lawrence Gordon, Roy Walter, Glen Neitzel, Ed Bowans, Eric?? Bressler, Marvin ???? and Bkd Murphy. Interment was in the St. Francis Cemtery with arrangements by the Kramier Chapel of St. Francis.
