She shares a gravestone with her daughter Mary's mother-in-law, Maria Eva Heckart, whose inscription is on the west side of the stone. Sarah Moyer's inscription is on the east side of the stone. The inscription was clear, but it was difficult to get a good picture, as that side of the stone is in the shade of the large tree it stands beside. Sarah Moyer's inscription is on the east side of the stone. Her name is only given as "Grandma" on the stone, and I found Sarah's name and birth information in ancestry.com on the family tree done by mijloader429. Obituary From Unknown Ottumwa Newspaper: 1897 (written) , Ottumwa, Wapello Co., Iowa GRANDMA MOYER (Mary Moyer Heckart's Mother) Mrs. Sarah Hutchison Moyer was born in Northumberland County, Penn. On January 14, 1798, her people being members of the Warrior Run Presbyterian Church. In 1825 she married Adam Moyer; removed in 1830 to near Sandusky City, Ohio, and in 1837 to Missouri, where her husband died in 1844. In 1852 she came to Iowa along with her son-in-law (Michael Heckart), with whom she made her home. She was one of the original members of the First Presbyterian Church of Ottumwa. She recalled with great interest her Pennsylvania pastor, Rev. John Bryson; also the ministers she knew in Missouri --- Rev. David Nelson MD, Rev. William P. Cochran, Rev. S.C. McConnell, Rev. Dr. Ely --- Ely and Nelson were connected with Marion College, located at what is now called West Ely, not far from where they lived. Mrs. Moyer was a remarkable woman for good sense, good health, good humor, and grit. She understood household work and duty, she also understood the reap-hook and the spinning wheel. She could WALK! She thought nothing of a walk of three or four miles and has been known to walk eight miles on a Sabbath morning to church. She was an excellent nurse in time of sickness. She had a remarkable constitution, and even at 80 years of age and beyond her eyes were not dim, nor her natural force abated. Withal she had a tender heart, and her attachment to family and friends, pastor and church was lasting as life. For many years she was accustomed to visit the writer's family, spending a month or six weeks with us each autumn, a visit which we always desired and which was mutually enjoyed. The end of her early course was reached after a few days illness, Aug. 25, 1885. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J. M. McElroy (author), Elder W. L. Orr MD of Ottumwa leading the singing. Her two surviving sons, John, and Elder Moyer reside in Mo. The former of these arrived just as the service closed, coming in time to look once more upon the face of his beloved mother. Additional Information From Cindy Halcomb Wyant: "Adam Moyer: b: 23 Dec 1795 Pennsylvania (probably Northumberland Co.) d: 1844, Monroe Co., Missouri. Originally buried in the Moyer Family Cemetery, Salt River Farm, Jefferson Twp, Monroe Co., Missouri. That cemetery location is now under Cannon Dam, and Mark Twain Lake. A family member has found a notation of "moved" regarding his grave, but location is unknown. Both Mary Eve Schneider Heckart (Michael's mother) and Sarah Hutchison Moyer (Mary's mother) resided in the household of Michael Heckart. Sarah stayed there even after her daughter had passed away and Michael had re-married. It was a large household. Michael and Mary Moyer Heckart had 10 children (my great-grandfather Joseph Elder was one of them); Michael and Rosa Backman Heckart would have 6 more." We do not know at this time when Sarah's son, George Elder Moyer or his wife Mary Ann Harness died or where they are buried.
