Description	:	Sarah "Sally" (Clevenger) Sisk is buried with a simple limetone-slab marker along Boone Way, 3 miles south of Newport, Tenn., in the Bryant-Sisk Cemetery. Next to hers is the similarly marked grave of her husband of 57 years, Lawton "Lawson" Sisk, and the father of their 11 children (2 died in infancy). Two of her daughters, Nancy Bryant and Sarah Bryant are buried nearby. (A third daughter, Elizabeth, also married a Bryant and moved to Texas.) In the same cemetery and the in the adjacent Hannon Cemetery (and in other nearby cemeteries, including Union Cemetery in Newport) are dozens of Sally's grandchildren, great-children, etc. She has almost as many offspring in Texas. And perhaps just as many are either buried or living in Missouri. Sally and Lawson's sons served as Confederate soldiers in the Civil War. Three (Branson, Carson, Addison) lost their lives. A fourth (Bart) lost his right arm and served as a prisoner of war for 2 years. Sally was born in Cocke County in 1809, a daughter of Elias Clevenger and Nancy Wood. In 1826, she married Virginia-born Lawson Sisk, the son of Revolutionary War veteran Bartlett Sisk (whose remains also lie in the Bryant-Sisk Cemetery). They raised their family in the Parrottsville area of Cocke County before moving to a farm owned by Lawson's father in the Lower English Creek area. Sally died at age 73 in 1883, leaving Lawson a widower for another decade. Lawson and Sally's daughter Elizabeth married William Carson Bryant, son of Tarlton Bryant. They moved their entire family to Collin Co., Texas. William Carson, however, had a positive impact on the English Creek Community before leaving for Texas. After spending 2 years in a Union prison camp in Indiana during the Civil War, he returned to campaign for a community public school. Before he left for Texas, Sardis School was built on a tract of land from his farm. (The school burned in the 1930s and was replaced with English Creek Elementary School.) William Carson and Beth's son, Austin Taylor, was one of the school's first teachers before he, too, left for Texas and later became a medical doctor. Austin Taylor's obituary (with Cocke Co. references) is posted online. William Carson's half-brother, Aaron/Aron Bryant (not to be confused with a nephew also named Aaron), also moved his family to Texas, with daughter Jane remaining behind. Jane Bryant married Samuel Baxter, who, along with many of their early descendants, are buried in the Baxter-Templin Cemetery near the base of English Mountain. Bryant (also buried in Bryant-Sisk), is a grandson of Sarah (Sisk) Bryant, Sally and Lawson's youngest daughter. Gene's mother, Mary Florence (Clevenger) Bryant (also buried in Bryant-Sisk), is a great-great-granddaughter of Sally's brother Alexander Clevenger.] Sally Clevenger and her siblings (children of Elias Clevenger and Nancy Wood): 1. Elizabeth Clevenger (1810-1889) married William Joseph Hightower (1807-1868). 4. Psyche Clevenger (1813-1887) married (1) James Gray (1810-1849) in 1831 (2) Jacob Blackwell (1796-1880) in 1860. 5. Alexander Clevenger (1814-1876) married Elizabeth "Betsy" Free (1818-1868). 6. John Clevenger (1818-1917) married Mary Clevenger (c. 1830 TN-? ). Had children by 1849. 7. Elias Clevenger, Jr. (1819-1889) married (1) Julia Julie Dillon (1823-1846) (2) Mahala Vesta "Mahaley" Hood (1829-1907). 8. Samuel Clevenger (1819-1876) married Mary Ann Humbard (1820-1911). 9. Archibald Clevenger (1820-1895) married Jane Garver (1841-1913). 10. Jackson Clevenger (1822-1869) married Martha Lane (1814-1860). 11. Aaron Clevenger (1823-1895) married Mary Baird (1823-1895).
