Description	:	Sarah Shephard Miller, was born near Wheeling, West Virginia August 8, 1836. Died January 4, 1917 at the advanced age of 80 years, 4 months and 26 days. When a small child she with her parents moved to Belmont, Ohio, where she spent her childhood days; later moving to Illinois, where they lived but a short time coming to Iowa in 1855, being one of the pioneer settlers of Union County, and where she has spent the balance of her life; living on the present home place for 45 years. Died January 4, 1917 at the advanced age of 80 years, 4 months and 26 days. When a small child she with her parents moved to Belmont, Ohio, where she spent her childhood days; later moving to Illinois, where they lived but a short time coming to Iowa in 1855, being one of the pioneer settlers of Union County, and where she has spent the balance of her life; living on the present home place for 45 years. When she was eleven years old, her mother died and she being the oldest of six children, the care and responsibility of the children and home rested upon her. All have preceeded her in death with the exception of the youngest brother, Daniel, of Waukeeta, Oklahoma, who was unable to be present at her death and burial. She was united in marriage, November 10, 1857 to Nathanial Thompson. To this union four children were born the oldest dying in infancy, and Robert H. who passed away January 5, 1913; Mrs. Eunice Boland of Charlton, Iowa and Mrs. Lottie Reagan of Kansas City, Missouri survive. Her husband dying in 1864, it left her with the care of three small children. August 1, 1967 she was again married to Perry Miller, who still survives her. To this union was born seven children, Minnie B. and May B. dying June 22, 1879; Clinton M. of Creston, Iowa; Mrs. Maud Moore of Indianola, Iowa; Charles M. of Creston; Bert A. of Afton and Chauncey W., on the home place, who has been a great comfort to his parents in their old age. Besides the children there were 13 [i.e. three] stepchildren, two of them were able to be present when she passed away. Mrs. Alice Larey of Afton and Perry Miller of St. Joe, Missouri. She was also mother to a babe left motherless by the death of her sister. She has been a constant sufferer for more than four years, when she was severely injured in a runaway, from which she never fully recovered. October 26, 1915 she suffered a stroke of paralysis. She recovered from this enough to be about her home, when on December 26, 1916 she was again stricken. This was too much for her already frail and aged little body to resist. She was conscious until the last. A few hours before her death she called her aged companion and children, all of which were with her, to her bedside asking each one to live so they could meet her in the home where there is no sorrow. She said her burdens and cares had been many but there was always joy mingled with them and that her Savior had appeared to her telling her to leave all her burdens with Him that he would bear them for her. She instructed her children how to live and be ready to meet her, asking them to kneel in prayer at her bedside. After which she sweetly fell asleep, only waking at intervals when she always said comforting things to her loved ones. When at last she fell asleep for the last time, only to waken in the Mansion prepared for her by her Savior. In early childhood she united with the Evangelical church in Afton, later in life she transferred her membership to the Methodist church, to which she remained a constant member until her death.
