An obituary for Sarah's husband, John, was published in the "Ottumwa Weekly Courier," of February 2, 1898, and another one published in the same paper on November 24, 1898. The obituary published on November 24 stated that John born in Washington County, Maryland, and was married to Sarah in 1840. In 1853, John, Sarah, and their babies emigrated from Maryland to Cumberland County, Illinois, where they remained for three years.
