Although the obituary that I have transcribed below is in the name of Ulysses, he went by the name of Silas in all other records that I have found. Although the obituary that I have transcribed below is in the name of Ulysses, he went by the name of Silas in all other records that I have found. Silas Swope married Melvina Magee on March 26, 1868, in Wapello County, Iowa. On August 18, 1893, he married Rosa L. Gates in Ottumwa. This obituary states that Ulysses died in Riverview. Silas' death record at the Wapello County Court House in Ottumwa shows that he died in Ottumwa, Riverview Addition. An area in the east end of Ottumwa was once referred to as Riverview. The obituary also states that Silas would be buried in the Brooks Cemetery, and when I created this memorial, I put it in that cemetery. When I checked the death record at the court house on February 18, 2014, I found that the cemetery named as his burial place was Round Point, and I moved his memorial into this cemetery. Silas' parents are buried here, and his first wife, Melvina, his second wife, Rosa aka Rose, and his son Abner are also buried here. I believe that Round Point is the correct burial place for Silas. ---------------- Obituary From Ottumwa Courier, September 7, 1915: DROPS DEAD WHILE SHINGLING HOUSE Ulysses Swope dropped dead at his home in Riverview at 3:30 p.m., Sept. 6. Mr. Swope and another man were building an addition to the Swope house and Mr. Swope had just entered the house to get a drink and had come outside and sat down on a bundle of shingles when he fell over dead. Mr. Swope was 70 years old. He is survived by four sons, Abner, Charles, Frank and Harry of Ottumwa, one son Clifford, and one daughter Martha at home; and one daughter, Mrs. Ella Schworm of Ottumwa. The funeral will be held from the residence Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., Harry Nye of the Pentecostal church being in charge and burial in the Brooks cemetery.
