Smith and Miss Viola Lyons were married by Rev. V. L. Cannon. The ceremony was performed under a draped arch erected in the corner of the parlor and was witnessed by only relatives and a few intimate friends of the contracting parties. The bride was attired in a very pretty dress made of cream Henretta trimed (sic) in elegant silk, laces and orange blossoms. The trousseau was complete from the bridal hat and veil to the white kid gloves and slippers, she appeared very beautiful indeed leaning on the arm of the groom, who wore a very becoming black suit. The groom is a young man of final promise and stands high in this community, and now has gained for himself the hand of one of the finest ladies of our acquaintance. Her life amongst us has been a more lasting compliment than any thing we might add. After the wedding the bride changed her costume to a traveling suit made of all wool novelty goods and started for Concordia. Mother and fatter Lyons you ought to have seen them you would have thought it was their very own business the way they flew around to make it pleasant for all. The table seemed to be groaning with its heavy burden of bounteous refreshments. It need not be said but that ample justice was done to this part of the program, all customes (sic) were adopted, the English, French, etc. Mr. Jellison said he belonged to the Dutch, and that they would eat two hours if they tolk a notion too, but he actually took home two boxes full for we seen him, that was worse. To say this was one of the grandest affairs of the season is putting it in mild form. RIEKE DIES SATURDAY Mrs. Sarah Viola Rieke, 74, of Chester, Neb., died November 20 at Brodstone hospital (sic) in Superior, Neb. Funeral services will be Friday, November 26 in Chester at the Christian church. The Rev. H. J. Crandall and the Rev. George Randall will officiate and burial will be in Chester cemetery (sic). Mrs. Rieke is survived by three sons, Alva Smith and Cleo Smith of Selah, Wash., and Lloyd Smith of Lexington, Neb.; three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Lane of Arapahoe, Neb., Mrs. Doris Reitz and Mrs. Ida Cramer of Superior, Neb., and a step-daughter, Mrs. Tony Allsman of Chester, Neb. ======================== The Chester Herald (Chester, NE), Wednesday, December 1, 1954; pg. 3 Obituary - SARAH VIOLA RIEKE Sarah Viola Lyons, eldest daughter of Andrew and Rosetta Lyons, was born October 30, 1880, at Bentonsport, Iowa, and passed away November 20, 1954, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior, Nebraska at the age of 74 years and 21 days. At the age of 12 years, she moved with her family north of Belleville, Kansas, where she spent the remainder of her girlhood. March 14, 1896 (sic) she was united in marriage to William H. Smith of Belleville, Kansas. To this union, 8 children were born, 5 girls and 3 boys. Her husband passed away May 30, 1916, leaving her with 8 children, the youngest not quite 2 years of age. In 1918, she and the children moved to Chester, Nebraska, where she devoted the next 17 years working at any task that would provide a home to keep the children together. She lived a Christian life, being an active member of the Christian Church in Chester, Nebraska. On July 17, 1935 she was united in marriage to Frank Rieke of Chester, Nebraska, who passed away November 20, 1946. In 1950, due to failing health, she moved to Superior, Nebraska to be near her daughters where she resided until her passing. Two daughters preceded her in death: Marie (Mrs. Taylor Carpenter) who passed away May 22, 1926 and Gladys (Mrs. Leo Mohr) who was called November 3, 1954. Her entire life was devoted to the love and welfare of her children and grandchildren, having played the roll of both father and mother. Her passing leaves an emptiness that cannot be fulfilled. She leaves to mourn her passing: Alva and Cleo Smith, Selah, Wash.; Lloyd Smith, Lexington; Doris (Mrs. Albert Reitz) and Iva (Mrs. Dale Cramer), Superior; Hazel (Mrs. Jack Lane), Arapahoe. 21 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren; two brothers, M.A. Lyons of Nelson, R.E. Lyons, Selah, Wash.; one sister, Francis (Mrs. L.E. Hines) of Fordland, Mo., besides a host of relatives and friends.
