SARAH McCLEARY Died, at her home in Des Moines township, Mrs. Sarah McCleary, Friday morning April 10th, 1896, at ten o’clock. Sarah Whitmore was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, November 30, 1824. In 1842, with her parents, she emigrated to Iowa and settled in Locust Grove township, this county. She was married to Joseph Kail in 1844. Three children were born of this union, two of whom are dead. Having lost her husband, in 1854 she was married to Benjamin McCleary. Eight children were born to them, four sons and four daughters, all of whom have grown to manhood and womanhood. All the children are married except one son, who resided at home with his mother. This good woman’s residence here dated back over half a century and there are many incidents in her life which are interwoven with the history of the county. She united with the Methodist church at an early age. Of her character it may be said that it shone with those qualities of truth and kindness, which endeared her to her many friends. She had a benevolent spirit, was ever ready to help the distressed, and to give a helping hand in time of sickness. There was a hospitality in her treatment of guests which none excelled, and many pleasant recollections of her kindness will remain in the memory of those blessed with her acquaintance. She was a loving mother, a true friend. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the relatives in their bereavement. The funeral took place from her late home, Saturday afternoon, April 11th, 1896, at two o’clock. Rev. Wolff, assisted by Rev. James Glotfelty, conducted the services. The remains were interred in the Sand Hill cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and friends.
