Description	:	Selma (Sally) Esther Tieszen Hieb passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD, at the age of 93. Sally was born October 9, 1921 in Marion, SD, to Dr. Isaac P. and Katie (Graber) Tieszen. She had three older siblings (Ewalt, Lillian and Albert) and three younger siblings (Delsie, Helen, and Ruby). Read More	Selma (Sally) Esther Tieszen Hieb passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD, at the age of 93. Sally was born October 9, 1921 in Marion, SD, to Dr. Isaac P. and Katie (Graber) Tieszen. She had three older siblings (Ewalt, Lillian and Albert) and three younger siblings (Delsie, Helen, and Ruby). She grew up in South Dakota, attending Marion High School, Freeman Junior College, and the University of South Dakota. Her extended family was nearby and was very dear to her. On May 31, 1942 she married Wilbert (Bill) Edgar Hieb, also from Marion, at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, Freeman, SD. They lived in several different places during the early years of their marriage—Vermillion, SD; St. Louis, MO while Bill was in medical school; and then Germany, immediately after World War II. Sally and their 2-year-old son, Barry, traveled to Bad Wildungen, Germany in 1946, where Bill was stationed as a physician with the Army Medical Corps. Son Jim was born in Germany in 1947, and in 1948 the family returned to Marion, South Dakota. Bill had a medical practice in Marion, and Sally was a homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed her young family; which grew to four sons with the addition of Charles and Richard. In 1954, the family moved to Henderson, Nebraska, where Bill continued his medical practice. Throughout her life Sally loved to serve as a hostess, entertaining visitors of all ages and walks of life, in their beautiful home. She was an excellent cook, who loved to cook traditional foods, as well as Korean and Japanese dishes. Sally enjoyed humor and practical jokes, and laughter was a constant feature of their home. She knitted beautifully, and gave many hand-knit gifts to family and friends. Both she and Bill had a deep appreciation for the church and for good music, as well as emphasizing the importance of education. During Barry’s college years, Barry brought home his good friend, Shingo Kajinami, who was warmly welcomed into the family, increasing the family of 4 sons to 5 sons. Sally was a faithful Mennonite and active church choir member, both at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church in Freeman and at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Sally and Bill were instrumental in procuring a new pipe organ for Bethesda. Sally was a lifetime member of AHSGR (American Historical Society of Germans from Russia), celebrating her roots as a descendant of Germans from Russia. She translated German stories into English for the AHSGR publications, and served capably as president of the organization for two years. After Bill’s retirement in 1995, the family moved back to South Dakota, first to Marion and then to Freeman. In 2007, Bill and Sally moved to Brookings to be closer to Richard and his family, due to Sally’s advancing Alzheimer’s disease. Sally is survived by her husband, Wilbert Hieb of Brookings, SD; sons, Barry (Fern) Hieb of Tucson, AZ, James Hieb of Tucson, AZ, Charles (Diane) Hieb of Prescott, AZ, Richard (Brenda) Hieb of Brookings, SD, and Shingo (Kathy) Kajinami of McPherson, KS; sisters, Ruby Waltner of Freeman, SD, Helen Tieszen of Sioux Falls, SD, and Lillian Glanzer of Marion, SD; eight grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers and her sister Delsie Bartel.
