Bill was born August 1, 1920 in Marion, SD to Jacob Jr. and Ruth E. (Irwin) Hieb. Bill was born August 1, 1920 in Marion, SD to Jacob Jr. and Ruth E. (Irwin) Hieb. He grew up in Marion with 5 siblings and delighted in assisting in any way possible in his grandfather’s well known Hieb’s Dept. Store. He was confirmed in the German Reformed Church in Marion, SD and united in marriage to Selma (Sally) Esther Tieszen May 31, 1942 at the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, Freeman, SD. Bill graduated from the Marion High School in 1938. He continued his education at University of South Dakota, graduating with Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in 1941 and Bachelor of Science in Medicine in 1943. He transferred to Washington University, St. Louis, MO completing his Medical Doctor degree in 1944 and internship and residency in 1946 through Evangelical Deaconess Hospital, in St. Louis, MO. Bill was called into army service in the Medical Corp following his education. He served stateside briefly and then was assigned to 1st Constab Regiment as Assistant Region Surgeon and then Region Surgeon from 1946 to 1948 in Rothwesten and Bad Wildungen, Germany. Late in 1946 Sally and first born son Barry joined him in Germany. Son James was born while in Germany. Bill was honorably discharged from service in 1948. The family returned to Marion, SD where Bill practiced general medicine. During this time the family grew to include two more sons, Charles and Richard. In 1954 Bill and family relocated to Henderson, NE where he continued his medical practice until retirement in 1984. During Barry’s college years Barry brought home his good college friend Shingo Kajinami, who was warmly welcomed into the family, increasing the family of four sons to five sons. Bill served the Henderson Community on the school board, city council and as mayor. He served on the board of directors of Bethel College, North Newton, KS. In leisure time Bill loved bowling and was a diehard Nebraska Cornhusker fan. He and Sally enjoyed classical music, reading, travel and especially time with family and friends. During the Henderson years he was a faithful member of the Bethesda Mennonite Church. He and Sally, along with son James, returned to South Dakota in 1996 settling in Freeman. There he was active in the Salem-Zion Mennonite Church and he and son James volunteered many hours at the Et Cetera Shoppe, (Ten Thousand Villages). In 2007 Sally and Bill moved to the United Living Community in Brookings, SD to be closer to son Rick and family. A kind, gentle person, Bill was dedicated to serving his patients thoughtfully and with great compassion. His integrity and commitment to living out his principles were evident in his daily life. He was highly respected throughout the communities he called home. He was a loving, devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle. He was well known for his sense of humor and along with wife Sally hosted many folks of all walks of life in their home. Bill is survived by sons, Barry (Fern) of Tucson, AZ, Charles (Diane) of Prescott, AZ, Richard (Brenda) of Brookings, Shingo (Kathy) Kajinami of McPherson, KS; sister, Kathleen Arendt of Minneapolis, MN; eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, three sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Sally, son James, his parents, brothers Kenneth and Robert, and sisters Helen Drummond, Lois Graber and Betty Lucas.
