Bass, a Resident of Lamoni for Forty-Five Years, Passes After Illness of Several Months Seth M. Bass, son of Brother and Sister Seth P. Bass. was born October 10, 1844 at Waterville, N. Y., and after an illness of a number of months passed from this life at his home in Lamoni on Friday morning, July 1, at 2 a.m., age 82 years 8 months and 21 days. He was the eldest child of a family of seven children, 2 boys and 5 girls, three of whom preceded him in death. On November 1, 1869, he was married to Sarah C. Jennings at Lawrence, Mich., and to this union were born three children, George, William H. and Harry. William H. passed from this life at the age of five years. Brother and Sister Bass moved to Lamoni nearly 45 years ago and were both well known by the people of this community. Sister Bass passed from this life on the 23rd day of March 1920. At the age of 30, Brother Bass united with the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, having been baptized by Elder Henry C. Smith, and continued a loyal and faithful member until the hour of his death. He was ordained to the office of priest on November 19, 1879 by Apostle W. H. Kelley and was elected president of the little branch at Lawrence, Mich., and continued in this capacity until he moved to Lamoni. He came to Lamoni in December, 1882 and lived for two years in what is now the house owned by Verdun Foreman. He bought two acres where his home now stands, and in 1884 his father came and they each built them a home. Seth M. occupying his until the time of his death. All around them was pasture land with stock grazing, there being only one other little house in that part of the town. The stone foundation of the Brick church was just being completed when Mr. Bass started his home across the street, so he had a prominent part in helping in the completion of the church. During his residence in Lamoni of 45 years he served as city marshal, also as night watch. For a quarter of a century he took care of the Brick church and while that was before the day of furnaces and electric lights he was very faithful to see that the building was in readiness for all services even though that required considerable effort on his part and on the part of his family. He leaves to mourn his departure, two sons, George and Harry both of Lamoni, two sisters, Mrs. Flora L. Scott of Lamoni and Mrs. Anna Braybroks of Lawrence, Mich., and one brother, Byron O. Bass, of Bronson, Colo., together with grandchildren and a number of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held in the Brick church Sunday afternoon, July 3. Sermon by Elder W. E.
