Funeral Held From Late Home On Thursday. Severn A. Evans, for more than seventeen years Chief of the Police force of Crisfield, and one of the best-known residents of this community, died suddenly at his home on Locust Street, at an early hour last Tuesday morning. Death was the result of a heart attack which he suffered while preparing to arise from his bed for the day, and which brought the end without warning. For several months he had been in failing health, but was active and working daily up until the end. Only the day previous to his death, he called his daughter's attention to the fact that Thursday was his birthday, and said that he would like her to make him a big cake in celebration of his anniversary. On the day of his funeral he was 74 years of age. When Mr. Roscoe Evans, his eldest son, got up Tuesday morning, he heard his father also preparing to arise in an adjoining room. The son went downstairs after dressing, but when the father failed to appear in a short while, the son started back upstairs to call him. He heard a gurgling sound as if someone was choking; and rushing to his father's room, he found Mr. Evans just closing his eyes in death. A sudden heart attack had brought his life to a close. "Capt. Seve," as he was familiarly known in Crisfield and along this section of the tidewater, was one of the old residents of Crisfield and one of the best-known watermen on Chesapeake Bay. He was a son of the late Mitchell Evans, member of one of the pioneer families of this community. His early manhood was spent in the Chesapeake oyster industry, and for many years he commanded one of the largest oyster boats on the Bay. He retired from the water when the big vessel began to pass from use in the oyster trade, and about 20 years ago was appointed Chief of the Crisfield Police force, a position he held for more than seventeen years, retiring from the force about 3 years ago. He served in that public capacity many years longer than any other man in Crisfield, and during the long period of service he became known throughout the State as one of the best police officials on the Eastern Shore. A man of remarkable judgment, of marked courage, and of fine discernment, he performed his duties with marked credit to himself and the city. He believed that arrest was a last resort and used more moderate methods of preserving the peace, law and order whenever possible—but whenever an arrest was necessary, he never failed to get his man. During his seventeen years as a police officer his life was endangered on many occasions, notably when his fellow officer, the late John H. Daugherty, with whom he was in company, was killed by a negro man, in the downtown section of Crisfield in 1908. Capt. Seve was a man of fine physique, almost a giant in size, and when dressed in his police uniform looked every inch the part. During several civic celebrations he marshalled the procession or directed traffic from horse-back, and his fine manly appearance was always a subject of comment. Upon the occasion of President Wilson's visit to Crisfield, about 1915, Chief Evans had the distinction of escorting the presidential party to their tender at the wharf, after a walk through the town. A man of jovial disposition, Capt. Seve always had a good word, a jolly smile and an amusing joke at hand, and he was immensely popular, esteemed and respected by the residents of Crisfield as a whole. Chief Evans was a widower, his wife having died about 7 years ago. He is survived by four children—Messrs. Roscoe and Alonzo Evans, and Mrs. Geo. Massey with whom he made his home in Crisfield; and Mrs. L. R. T. Dixon of Kilmarnock, Va. Nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services were held from Immanuel M. E. Church on Thursday afternoon, with Rev. J. L. Johnson officiating, and interment was in this city.
